This year through a business associate I received a free mooring in Newport, RI., the gentleman was a friend and would refuse any type of compensation. The location was ideal, close to all the waterfront bars and cafe's. Perfect place for many events, america's cup trial, queen mary 2 visit, tall ships, and the Newport Jazz festival. The problem is he has taken his mistress to the boat several times when I wasn't around. He is meticulously clean but leaves behind clues, like the girls blonde hairs, my scotch bottle goes down a bit, and leaves a cd or dvd aboard that I don't own. The captain quarters are never used, should I remain aloof, or should I risk losing the spot, obviously there is no free lunch but being new to the sailing game I feel like I have made a deal with the devil for a spot that is really second to none. Most moorings in this area can run as much as $2700 a season with daily rates in Newport from $40-$100. My wife loves the place, and thinks it nice to have someone keeping a "eye" on the boat when we're not around, cleaning up, and leaving nice music cd's behind for us to listen to while sailing.
