Is there a solution to taking off the black mold accumulating on the vinyl rub rail. Fiberglas cleaner, rubbing compound are not effective.

All bad stuff so wear gloves, MEK or lacquer thinner always works on mine.

I recently used foaming bleach and a soft scrub sponge to clean mine and the deck. It's really convenient and does not run. It stays where you spray it until you wipe it clean. I would follow up and plan to on the C27 with a solution of vinegar as suggested by Zeehag. My decks are still mould free after 3 weeks but I will still treat with vinnegar after googling it.

Hi Caguy. What is the formula for the vinegar solution. I would like to try this before going to acetone or lacquer thinner. But I will try anything to get the stuff off. It ruins the excellent profile of my 27 year young Cat27.

Haven't tried it yet, but I would use it straight out of the bottle. I would use the bleach foam and socft scrub spnge first to remove it. That I know works and then the vinegar straight out of the bottle to keep the mold away.

Hi

I tried 2 of the 3 recommendations-Lacquer thinner and bleach/vinegar.
Lacquer thinner did a 95% clean job. But working ladder close to the rail brought me close to the fumes. I’ll have to do some research on protective masks for this.
The foaming bleach required a water rinse and since I just polished my hull, I used a bleach wipe followed by the vinegar. I would say it got a credible 75%.
I am having a late launch so I’ll have to postpone most of the job until the fall.
I’ll look at acetone also.
Thanks all,

Catalina 270 255 Wabamun. Welcome to the marina
I used acetone on mine. Probably akin to taking a pitchfork to an appetizer tray. The stuff works great, and the only question is one of any long term chemical damage to the rub rail. If you use acetone, please stay upwind of it.
