I have a 25 but am hinking of upgrading to a 27. will an with a 8HP outboard be underpowered? 2nd. are there anything seriously specific with the 27 that one should look at before buying. i.e. a sprecific area of weekness or problematic? Thanks C-25 Gypsy

9.9 worked fine on our 26

We had a 9.9 hp outboard on our 26', was plenty. I have seen 5 and 6 hp on similar boats. Some folks like light and small, and only use it when they have to (no wind). Others like to be able to hit hull speed into the wind. I think a 9.9 would be a good size for a 27.

I have an 8hp on my cat 27

and 99% of the time it pushes the boat at hull speed. When I bought the boat in '89 it had a Johnson 8 sailmaster (long shaft). I replaced it in 2001 with a new Johnson Sailmaster and have had no regrets.

Had a 8hp and now 5hp

When I purchased my boat it came with Suzuki 8hp 2 stroke. I have replaced the 8hp 2 stroke with a 5hp 4 stroke and the 5hp works fine. Note, the 5 hp 4 stroke is the largest 4 stroke that will mount in the transmom of a 27 this is due to the taller powerhead. When buying your 27 haul or dive it and look for the smile and inspect the keel bolts.
