I am trying to remove a few mildew stains from my jib. These stains are mostly near the foam luft. I have soaked the sail in a mixture of liquid detergent, water and a small amount of bleach for about 24 hours now and it doesn't seem to be working. A friend has suggested possibly using Shout to remove these stains. Has anyone tried this and had any success? Another suggestion has been to use OxyClean as either a paste or soaking agent. Has anyone tried either of these products to remove these stains? Thanks

Consult a Reputable Sailmaker

Mildew can eventually ruin a sail. So can many cleaning agents used to kill it. Check with your local Sail Loft to find out what to use. You'll need to tell them something about the type of sail, material(s) used, etc. I have my sails removed, cleaned, inspected, and stored annually by a local Loft during the winter haulout. That cleaning takes out more than just mildew -- lots of salt & other stuff builds up on them. The pros can also spot impending fabric or thread failure early enough to get (cheaper) repairs going. --Ron s/v Lady Jane
