Mikalor W5 Supra clamp

Hi again everyone,

Though I'd put this in a separate message from my hatch seals question for organizations sake.

Does anyone know where I can buy one individual Mikalor W5 supra clamp? Currently I've got a 79-85mm W4 supra (306 steel rather than 316 like the W5) on the engine exhaust which has started rusting which I'd like to replace. I can only find W5 supras in boxes of 25 or 50 so if anyone knows where I can buy just the one, that would be great.

Best,
Jan

According to a german newspaper, recently s/y Berserk is reported missing in
Antarctica. Possibly this is Jarle Andhøys?

Remember in the nineties Jarle undertook a voyage in Antarctica with his, at
that time, Vega Berserk. Later Jarle sailed a larger Berserk of a
different make.

Appreciate to hear more news if/when available.

Many thanks,

Rob Kloosterman

Hi Rob,

Here is the story from exporersweb/oceans. Same Jarle on a bigger Berserk.

Jody"Berserk missing: - All safety principles broken
Posted: Feb 27, 2011 12:35 pm EST
(By Jon Amtrup) The yacht Berserk and the three sailors are still missing. At the moment no one is looking for them. Andh?y, leader of the disastrous expedition, gets massive criticism in New Zealand from leading Antarctica experts, while the Sunday Star Times calls them "foolhardy self proclaimed Vikings."

Following a massive search operation off Antarctica's coast since Tuesday morning when Berserk's distress beacon went off; Sea Shepherd?s boat Steve Irwin is now on her way to Tasmania.

Running low on fuel and exhausted after the effort; the crew has little hope that the three missing, Gisle Belika (36) , Robert ?Burro? Skaanes (34), and Leonard J. Banks (32) will be found alive ? or ever found at all.

Jarle Andh?y and Samuel Massie (18) arrived at the Scott base on Saturday on their ATV?s. They will most likely be flown out of Antarctica on Monday.

Meanwhile officials and Antarctica experts in New Zealand are voicing some serious concern as towards the expedition lack of safety focus.

?A foolhardy voyage to Antarctica by a group of self-proclaimed Vikings has cost three lives while forcing a New Zealand navy ship and its 55 crew into savage seas, damaging the new vessel? writes Sunday Star Times in New Zealand.

The Berserk-gang hadn?t been in contact with the Norwegian Polar Institute before they left for Antarctica. All people going down to Antarctica need a permit.

"There are a whole lot of treaties down here and they have managed to violate every one of them," said Scott Base manager Troy Beaumont to media in New Zealand.

Antarctic New Zealand CEO Lou Sanson told Radio New Zealand that Andh?y and Massie on the ice shelf were stuck amidst crevasses in a whiteout with minus 20C temperatures. "Why you would want to drive a motorbike to the South Pole at this time of year is completely beyond us. It just seems all the safety principles operating in Antarctica have been broken," he said.

Two experienced Norwegian explorers who were to join the Berserk in New Zealand refused to step aboard for the trip to Antarctica due to ?safety concerns?, according to a Norwegian newspaper.

The only hope for the three men is the cruise ship Spirit of Enderby who will be sailing through the area Monday.

About charter yacht Berserk
Skipper Jarle Andh?y has been to Antarctica before, then in a 27-foot sailing boat. A high profile sailor in Norway, Andh?y has appeared on several TV shows and in the news. He was fined and sentenced in Norway for trying to ?talk to the Polar Bears? on Svalbard.

Accused of smuggling a crew member who had been sent out of the country on charges of being a Hells Angel, on his last trip through the Northwest Passage Canadian authorities cuffed Jarle Andh?y and flew him back home to Norway."

Thanks for passing this info, when I read Jody Schroath cut and paste plus the I
got too upset and had to send the Lou Sanson a message. which is bellow.

I hope Berserk makes it under its own steam to where ever there is safety.

Bellow the link to the contact webpage of the NZ antarctica unit.

Dear Sir,

Regarding your comments on the possible loss of S/Y Berserk I find infuriating
an degrading that someone in a position such as your self could make comments,
which instead of praising highly the courageousness of people who although
having a number of obstacles still managed to get to places beyond the reach of
regular humans, you, instead try to portrait them as a bunch of amateurs.

My self being a sailor on temperate climates, safety is the first item on my
agenda (and that of those sailors around these parts), and with out a second of
thought I would have to say Jarle’s position on the matter too.

Ask your self this question. You have some brilliant members on your team, how
many of them would be willing to go days with out properly laid out meal times,
warm food, a warm bath and a warm and dry bed in which to sleep 8 hrs a day?

With all the funds that the NZ government provides it is easy to have all the
latest technology and equipment, next time you have to give an opinion, just
think for a minute on the dreamer, the real adventurer and the little man who
would do and give anything to reach the last frontier.

If your comments where misinterpreted then perhaps a clarification from the
newspaper is required.

Regards

Roger

In the US, inconvenience or possible danger to rescue personnel is a common "reason" govts often use to restrict the actions or freedoms of individuals.

It is sad to see that this "logic" is now being applied to the open ocean.
I understand the the Chilean govt now requires yachts in their waters to carry insurance that covers the cost of rescue efforts.

I will be a great loss to the world when adventuring once again becomes something only the wealthy can do. Unfortunately, we may see that in our lifetimes.

As of now, Jarle and the young kid Simon are in New Zealand, but all
formal search for Beserk has been called off.

New Zealand rescue center will not bill Jarle for the search as some
have said, but he could get fined from norwegian authorities for not
applying for permission to enter the Norwegian zone.

Jarle says that the prime minister invited him to go there (in a TV show
last year).

Latest update:

WELLINGTON, March 3, 2011 (AFP) - - Norwegian adventurer Jarle Andhoy
rejected criticism Thursday of his ill-fated mission to Antarctica and
said he clung to hope the three crewmen missing from his yacht will be
found.

"There is still a little hope as no evidence of (a) sunken ship is
found," he said in a statement, adding he strongly rejected "all
criticism which is not based on facts" about the expedition.

Andhoy and Samuel Massie were travelling across Antarctic by quad bike
heading to the South Pole when their support vessel with three crew on
board disappeared in a fierce storm.

Sea and air searches have only found the boat's damaged and
ice-encrusted liferaft.

New Zealand rescue officials, responsible for searches in the area,
have said there is no hope of finding survivors.

Antarctica New Zealand chief executive Lou Sanson said the 48-foot
(14-metre) sailboat The Berserk was in Antarctic waters at one of the
coldest times of the year and when the area was prone to fierce
storms.

"At this time of year we close the (Antarctic) bases for a very good
reason," he said.

But Andhoy said in a statement the disappearance of the vessel was a
mystery as shortly before its emergency beacon was activated the
captain had "reported of a happy ship".

He said they were equipped to be self-sufficient in all climates and
conditions with security and safety a priority.
