Now I know this is really going to stir up some hard feelings and rub some salt water in the wounds of coastal and big water sailors, whom I know are paying exorbadant rates on a per foot basis for their slip. So without further comment, other than saying that the location of this sign is within an hours drive or so of the centre of the continent, I hereby post this picture. Vent all you want!

What is the Canadian Dollar worth to The American

I pay $675.00 a year American Dollar at Lake Ouachita, Arkansas. U.S.A. and sail all year around. What is the season up there? 2 months? Tim Welsh Hunter 34, AKA Cabo Wabo

Impressive!

Greetings from the warm San Francisco Bay Area, where we are lucky to even FIND an available slip (at almost any price), And your price probably even includes a free ice breaker in the winter months. Best regards, and Happy sailing! Catch my wake...

no squables

Hey Randy, in reference to canadians squabbling, our squabbles are with the east not with each other. Actually, Rick is emphasizing my point that, (although he gets to go sailing a bit earlier than I do) we are both paying fees one tenth of what some coastal yachters are paying. East of here, a couple of hours the mosquitoes are bad, especially around the Red River, but around here, western Manitoba, they only seem to bug Albertans. (I think its the oil in their blood). As for the winters though, I can't argue with the comments about the cold, it got down to 51 below with the wind chill one day this past winter. (but its a dry cold!) And Scott, what are those critter leaping off your bow?

Hey Don Head to Ghost Lake Marina east of Calgary

Don from Montana ... there are several marine stores here in Calgary but only two that specialize in sailboats. Glenmore Sailboats have moved out of the downtown area to a location on the corner of Barlow and 16th Ave N. It's a little tough to find. Better choice would be the Marine Store at Ghost Lake in Cochrane, just 15 minutes west of Calgary (on old Banff Trail). They are loaded with supplies. R

Probably the BEST deal around is in Sask

Hey Roger ... I heard that there is $150 per year moorage fee in Lake Deifenbaker in S.E. Saskatchewan (Sask Landing I think). The lake is enormous - probably 40 miles long and deep (400 feet in places). If I recall correctly, it is shaped like a reverse "L" with the boot of the "L" heading N-S. I guess they get great sailing weather there in July qand Aug with 15 to 20 knot winds and sunny skies. Fishing is also said to be awsome with a trout farm having bust apart and ten million rainbow trout splling into the lake. The record Lake Trout come from Deifenbaker I think. Best regards for a great Great Canadaian Prairie Sailing Summer. Rick

Canadian Dolphins

The only Dolphins we see up here in February are in the West Edmonton Mall acquatic centre. Nice photo.

Real sailing lakes

There are only a few 'real' sailing lakes in Manitoba, (ie where there is marina support). In western Manitoba there is Pelican Lake. Clear Lake in Riding mountain has a harbour but no marina or yacht club with facilities. In central other parts of the province, Lake Winnipeg, I think is the only other option which has marinas located on its shores. I think there are only three marine suppliers in the province, Bowline Yachts, Northern Sail, and Cargo East Marine supply, all located in or near Winnipeg. Eastern Manitoba has West Hawk lake, but I am not familiar with any marina there, although I am sure that there are some. My son is moving to Lethbridge this fall, so on future trips, I'll have to take the longer route through Calgary to hit that marine supply store in Cochrane. As for the best deal around for storage, it is likely where we have our cottage at Clear Lake. There is a boat compound there, and there is no storage fee whatsoever. (Of course, there are no facilities either, and no free slips.) For the use of the compound, they don't even check to see if you are a local resident. There is a park entry fee however, as it is a national park. (Now that I have said that, I have likely jinxed it for myself!) Attached is another picture of the marina at Pelican Lake.
