I see many boats with microwave ovens. Do you use yours enough to keep it onboard. Have sailed since 1979 without one, but am upgrading my galley on hunter 34, 1984 model. What do you think?

We use ours. I wouldn't say daily, but often. Leftovers get warmed up. We also keep frozen breakfast sandwiches and fully cooked burgers for an emergency meal (bad weather, late arrival) which can be nuked.

Often many times a day, but we are liveaboards.
Heating water, leftovers, steaming veges, baking taters and cooking things like rice in a m/wave pressure cooker are just a few of the things we use it for.
It's fast and cooks w/o heat, so it's great in the tropics or on a hot summer day, if you get those that far north. It even works on the inverter, so we don't need to start a generator to use it. We wouldn't be w/o ours.

Make sure you have a sine wave inverter. Yup, I use it, mostly in the winter for left overs. Fewer pots to clean, which can matter.

We use ours for storage of a salad spinner and we use it occasionally. I find that the power of these small microwaves makes them less desirable to use. We use our stove and oven for all main meal prep. If it is a toss-up whether to use the MV or the stove, the stove usually wins. I don't think I would install a MV if I had a better use for the space.

I bought my boat new 11 years ago, has a galley stove that has never seen gas, and a microwave that probably still has some of the original packaging inside it. Boat is for sailing not for cooking.

With no Genset, we can only use our microwave in the slip, or when shore power is available in a transient docking. Cindy usually has premade hors douveres, kept chilled during sail and almost immediately available once back on dock for a sunset picnic with our guests. So, yeah we use ours pretty regularly. This was shrimp on the barb-e evening.

Why did you buy one with a galley? Get a real race boat.

Good question. Basically pretty much done with racing and this was an attempt to appease the war department. She spent a lot of time off the water when I was actively racing. Then we bought the place on the water too.

Never had a problem w/our microwave operating on our modified sine wave inverter.

I like having a microwave for popcorn while spending the night in the slip. Otherwise I haven't used ours.

I thought about putting one in but they don't make one small enough to install above the galley without cutting into the beautiful cabinetry. I'm not a liveaboard so the rare occasion I wanted popcorn or reheat diner wasn't worth the demolition and expense.

Was glad we had it on a 3 week cruise when the back up CNG bottle would not work owing to a defective valve. Normally, we only use it for fast warm ups of leftovers or breakfast cereal. We use it on shorepower of off the 500 amp hour house bank with the 2000 watt inverter. We could live without it but it is sometimes very handy.

I have one on the counter, left over from the PO live aboard. How do you tie it down so it's not a missle when your sailing?

I have an Emmerson ice maker on the counter, I use bungee cords to tie it down.

When in dock we use the microwave oven a lot - it can do so many things from defrosting to cooking to heating up infant formula. It can also be used in such a way as to generate minimal washing up. Whole meals cooked and eaten out of one Pyrex jug.
We also have a toaster oven for some items that just need a bit more personality than a microwave can produce, and an electric kettle for convenience.
Anything that makes much smoke or smells gets done on the barbecue off the stern because a) it does'nt stink up the cabin and b) it does'nt set off the fire alarm.
