Weekend Trip
Hi,We did some sailing this weekend.Friday, we left Mt. Sinai and sailed across the LI Sound to Milford Ct. We had good wind at 15-20 kts the entire way. A reefed main and 140 genoa worked great, with boat speed of 5-6 kts the entire way.Saturday we left Milford and sailed east to the Thimble Islands. Again, good wind, from the north at 10, then 15, then 20 kts. Started with full sail, then rolled up the 140 to a 100 when the wind hit 20. Dropped sail and motored around the Thimbles for an hour, then sailed to Branford CT. Sunday we left and sailed home. Again, good wind, 10-15 kts the entire day, but with warmer temps and bright sun.We sailed about 60 nm over the three days and the boat was great. A good time was had by all (wife and 3 kids, 13, 10, 7). Truth be told, the kids enjoyed the marinas more than the sailing, but hey, they went and didn't complain too much.Last interesting note:Friday afternoon, about half way across the sound, I am below making some lunch for everyone. The autopilot is steering, my wife is keeping watch. I'm about ready to come on deck when my wife calls me because a powerboat is coming closer and closer to us. I take a look and it's a small coast guard boat, and the blue lights are on. Hmm, that's strange. I look at the VHF and it's on channel 17, not 16. Oh. I pick up te radio, change to 16 and hail them. They respond immediately and ask for my documentation number. I provide it, they tell me to hold on. A little while later they ask my destination and home port. I respond and they ask me to wait. Then they ask how many passengers are on board. The entire time they are looking at us. We (my wife, my, 3 kids) are all in the cockpit, and all wearing PFD's. Then they tell us to have a nice day and leave. The funny thing is about 10 minutes later we heard them hail a powerboat. The powerboat must not have given the right answer, so they sent a boarding party. We watched the small boat go over to the powerboat. About 10 minutes later the CG left, but the power boat called them back because the CG guys left a backpack on board the powerboat!Barry
