Was your Memorial Day Weekend about sun and wind... or sandpaper and wrenching? Did you enjoy some time on the water or was it a time to prep for the weekends ahead? Maybe other matters took you away from the boat altogether? Tell us how you spent your 3-day weekend then vote in the Quick Quiz on the home page.

The weather here in So. Calif is lousy, damn Al Gore.

Made the best of if by getting some repairs and mods done on the boat. Here are some of the things I got done: Loosened up and greased the frozen winches. Replaced the trailer winch. Loosened up the frozen mount bolts on the motor. Installed 50 amp shore power plug and wired boat for 120v. Sanded and varnished wood on boat. Changed out genoa track with cam cleated fairleads. Cut and pinned canvas top for pop-top. And somehow managed to keep the wife happy. Ran out of time, we are on our way to a Memorial Day picnic. Frank

It blew 20+ here from the NE so we anchored at the point Sunday. After almost losing my new anchor 3 times to the idiots that don't seem to understand the rope coming out of the front of the boat, I decideded to wrench on Monday. Got alot done and enjoyed the day. Bar-B-Que is on now and another Memorial Day will be survived. John

I had planned

To install my new S1 Wheel pilot but realized I need to make some parts at the shop to install the rudder sensor and compass so I tackled the back breaking job of compounding and waxing the deck and all the areas around the non skid (thanks Maine Sail for your input)and my 30 year old girl looks great! I was going to shove off Sat. night and go hang on the hook with some friends but was too tired but spent Sunday sailing in the afternoon and today the wind was 20+ so we gave sailing a rest

We left Saturday morning and trip has been - think the wind is blowing that way and that is the way we are going. Saw 'Spirit of Liberty' - Bad Obsession Monday morning going south. Tried to raise him but didn't have his radio ON. We passed about hundred yards apart and gave a blast on the horn but no response. Have a great time Bad.... The winds were blowing up to 20kts on the Potomac today. 90-120 apparent with reefed main and jib. Still doing 6.5kts. I'm now sitting at the dock writing this with steak and rum in my belly and all is right with the world. Good nigh and tomorrow is more sailing.......

It was memorable! My uncle at 19 died in St. Loe.

That was a great loss to my dad and his family. It is also memorable that my dad made it home from his experiences, for not only him but for the great family he raised and the values he lived! This day is for memorium. Thanks to those who gave it all and thanks to those whom were willing! The only happy thing about this Memorial Day is the memory of those who did give it all and those who are willing today! With Great respect! r.w.landau

Sailed over 40 miles this weekend

I single-handed out to Cat Island Sat. morning. Returned today. Three days and two nights. Counted 50 boats in Smugglers Cove Sat! Wind blew great today. SW brought me right back. Great time. Relaxing. Left the boat in LBH for the first time (been trailering). A little apprehensive about it. I guess I will get better. 3 days on the water and bilge was bone dry...

Weekend Trip

Hi, We did some sailing this weekend. Friday, we left Mt. Sinai and sailed across the LI Sound to Milford Ct. We had good wind at 15-20 kts the entire way. A reefed main and 140 genoa worked great, with boat speed of 5-6 kts the entire way. Saturday we left Milford and sailed east to the Thimble Islands. Again, good wind, from the north at 10, then 15, then 20 kts. Started with full sail, then rolled up the 140 to a 100 when the wind hit 20. Dropped sail and motored around the Thimbles for an hour, then sailed to Branford CT. Sunday we left and sailed home. Again, good wind, 10-15 kts the entire day, but with warmer temps and bright sun. We sailed about 60 nm over the three days and the boat was great. A good time was had by all (wife and 3 kids, 13, 10, 7). Truth be told, the kids enjoyed the marinas more than the sailing, but hey, they went and didn't complain too much. Last interesting note: Friday afternoon, about half way across the sound, I am below making some lunch for everyone. The autopilot is steering, my wife is keeping watch. I'm about ready to come on deck when my wife calls me because a powerboat is coming closer and closer to us. I take a look and it's a small coast guard boat, and the blue lights are on. Hmm, that's strange. I look at the VHF and it's on channel 17, not 16. Oh. I pick up te radio, change to 16 and hail them. They respond immediately and ask for my documentation number. I provide it, they tell me to hold on. A little while later they ask my destination and home port. I respond and they ask me to wait. Then they ask how many passengers are on board. The entire time they are looking at us. We (my wife, my, 3 kids) are all in the cockpit, and all wearing PFD's. Then they tell us to have a nice day and leave. The funny thing is about 10 minutes later we heard them hail a powerboat. The powerboat must not have given the right answer, so they sent a boarding party. We watched the small boat go over to the powerboat. About 10 minutes later the CG left, but the power boat called them back because the CG guys left a backpack on board the powerboat! Barry

Rememberance

Several of use are Veterans and we remebered our past experiences and fallen friends. We also have a friend that is serving in Iraq now and will be home in December 2008. I want to thank all of our troops, and God Bless the ones that did not make it back.

I am not sorry about this post!

Memorial Day is about those whom were not fortunate enough to come home from fights we can not comprehend. It is not about a day off!and the trip we took!and this is not a religious post! SBO screwed this question up! I can not compromise those that gave it all for us! r.w.landau

Perfect Weekend

Ask any sailor around here and they will tell you weather on the lower Bay and around Hampton Roads, Virgnia was perfect this weekend. Place was jammed with canvas. Winds from the NNW swinging around to SW - all around 9-12 kts. Saturday and Sunday were the best, today a little more breezy. Our H31 got a workout. How often do you get three days of great sailing weather on a long holiday weekend?

I watched a couple of programs

on TV. One was about Medal of Honor winners. One of them John Kelly got it awarded twice for his heroism in WWI. Come to find out, they said that he was a "runner" who delivered written messages from place to place and that this was perhaps the most dangerous job a soldier did in that war. My nephew recently showed me the orders given to my grandfather in that same war and to my surprise, he was a runner too. He never talked about it except to say that there were some things which could not be conveyed in words and should not be spoken about except to someone else who had experienced it. I thought about all of this and my dad who fought in the Pacific in WWII and my friends that I knew in Vietnam. Those guys made possible the wonderful life we have today. I am grateful and inspired by their selfless heroism. Thanks to all of you veterans for all that you have made possible. Thanks too to those soldiers fighting right now. The world is a better place because you are making it so. That is what today is about.

R. W. I am with you completely. But I also think we need

to soak up all the freedom that has been afforded us by those who gave everything. Often as I sail freely through American waters, flying an American Flag, I think how lucky can I be? I am aware that this great life is a gift purchased by others. I find myself saying a silent almost second by second thankyou to our veterans. And yes, the question could have been worded better.

Winds were 15~18. Actually reefed the main for the first part of the sail, but latter shook it out. It was totally great. Crew was superb. Minor motor problems in the beginning but they cleared up later. Today was probably one of the best sailing days I've had in awhile.

An afternoon sail turned into 3 days!

A couple of lady friends wanted to go out just for the day here in Seattle. That was Saturday. We got home today, Monday, three days later! We had just too much fun sailing to downtown Seattle to quit there. Moored at Bell Harbor Marina for the night, and visited downtown until the wee hours. Sunday, the Pike Place Market offerd all the fresh seafood and fixin's for the BBQ we had that night. Monday the girls were still in the boat for the sail home! Good thing the Catalina 36 has ample room for sleeping 5 at the last minute. (My pillow was a cushion from the salon wrapped in a sailbag.) And the girls brought clean "knickers" just in case!

GREAT!

I always make every effort to reach the Memorial Day weekend with STARGAZER ready for the season. It was particularly challenging this spring due to the unusually dismal weather - but I survived it and was ready to go! We had two beautiful sails - and that makes it just SO worth it! Lake Superior still having wintery days

Had plans to take tarp off boat, clean things up and get ready to launch, but it was so darn cold, didn't feel like doing anything outside...42 degrees, wild, windy with unpredictable changes yesterday. Day started with the lake flat calm and sunny, changed to roaring black seas and thick fog that came and went throughout the afternoon.

Great weekend here. Did a 10 mile there and back race on Monday, and despite the difficulty of tacking a cutter, we were able to take first in the white sails division. We saw gusts up in the low 30s apparent.

Monterey Bay

Left Santa Cruz Harbor Saturday at 10:00, 8-12 kts from the west. Reach south at hull speed. 10 miles out spot pod of whales 100 yards off port spouting and tailing. 15 miles out wind shift to south and builds to sustained 30 kts with 35 kts gusts. (of course we are headed south!) Reef way down and make last 6 miles to Monterey in two hours. Very happy to have a dodger and weather cloth around cockpit. Arrive Monterey 16:30. Guest slip at Monterey Harbor. Sunday walk to Cannery Row. I-MAX "The Wild Sea" and seafood dinner at the Monterey Wharf. Leave Monterey Monday at 09:00 motor North 4 miles in flat glassy conditions, wind fills from west at 10 kts, seas dead flat, set autopilot and make 5-6 kts for next 10 miles. Two more whale sightings. Very easy to see them in flat glassy conditions. Close enough to see the barnacles on them when they breach. Lots of tail action. Wind freshens to 22-24 kts. Reef down and make hull speed last 7 miles. Arrive Santa Cruz 13:30.

Cool but PERFECT!!!!

We had a fantastic weekend sailing Penobscot Bay, Maine. The winds were strong and the temperature was cool, but the sailing was ideal. We had most of West Penobscot Bay to ourselves as well. Happy sailing everyone, Christian
