Swept Away

I've noticed that all the new boats have mattresses in the cabins, forward and aft. We are live aboards in the summer and love the idea of a mattress. Because we live on the great lakes, our water temperature varies dramatically. When the water is cold we run our heater. This causes a great deal of condensation. In the fall the inverse (water warm air cool) creates the same condensation. We have found that the vinyl on the bottom of the cushions is very functional. We use chlorinated disinfectants to control the naturally ocurring mold and mildew. The cabin mattresses have cloth fabric both sides, how do you control the mold and mildew?

Try this

Try HMC they are in Pompano FL 1-800-241-7751 or 954-946-3286. They have a real nice product that has the vinel on one side and all the comfort from a mattress. Made to order.

Mildew preventer

I've read about this product that's like a sheet of material that you place under your mattress. I can't recall the name for the life of me but I'm pretty sure West Marine carries it. It's an absorber so you have to replace them, but you'd probably only have to do that 2-3 times a year. Relatively inexpensive & you don't have to replace your mattress. LaDonna

Having Just made that same decision...

My wife & I just purchased new cushions throughout, on our Cat 30. We had a local mattress factory make them (without the "marine Mark-up"). They offered to make us a mattress for just a bit more than the cushions for the V-Berth. They stated the mattress option would work best if in a single piece. Since we have several access panels I use regularly, we decided to pass and get split cushions. I couldn't lift a single heavy mattress & get to the access panels. But if you don't access the stuff underneath, the mattress is much more comfy. Since the mattress would be custom made, I'm shure you can have vinyl sewn in, similar to the cushions.
