Hi. we are thinking of purchasing a 1983 34 foot Hunter. The problem is she doesn't have a mast. Does anyone know where we can find one. Love the Boat. Thanks

check specs and then check salvage yards

You can order masts from any number of places. They are fairly standard aluminum extrusions (same for booms) with fittings on the top. I would check salvage yards. Big ones usually have some masts. One that is too long can be cut. Is the 34 keel stepped or deck stepped? If keel stepped, a mast that is a bit too short can have an extension added or the step can be built up - depends on if you are 3 inches or 10 inches short. Near me is Don's Salvage, and the last time I was there I would guess there were a dozen masts in the yard of various sizes.

get a price for new replacement, and work that in

to the offer. Mast, plus fee to step - this WILL require a crane or a travel-lift with crane. Rigging - not cheap. Do you have the turnbuckles? It can be 50 bucks for a little fitting. Have a rigger give you an estimate based on a COMPLETE descrition of the rig. Tuning. After you sail once or twice in good winds, you might want a rigger to go out with you and check the tune of the rig. (Wire rope streches a bit after it is first installed) Don't use rod rigging. Installing mast-head fixtures, lights, antennas, steaming light, deck light, etc. If you have no mast, you will need new spreaders. Do the chain plates need to be replaced? Easier now than later. Do you want roller furling? easier now (though it may not be kosher to cook this into the price)

can't help but think

if there is no mast what about the boom and sails. I do think think the cost of a roller furler is ok to add to you cost as most boats have them (if your is missing or damaged) and you might want to think about a roller furling main sail as well. With all the associated rigging and cost to transport(bet you will surprized what this will cost to ship to Nova Scotia Canada) and install this becomes a very expensive repair and with out it the boat is just about worth parts only. You need to be careful here that you don't buy a boat and have to spend more to buy and repair it then it is worth!

Debra, you talk as if

the Hunter 34 can be rigged with any old extrusion found lying in a salvage yard. These boats are equipped B&R rig. That means the mast is specific to the boat. The spreader angle is specific too. They can't be interchanged. The shrouds are specific. The tunning is done before the mast is stepped. Have I made my point? There's more, should I go on?

A Mast for You

Nancy, Here in the Pensacola area we have about 500 sail boats in two shipyards waiting disposition. Huricane IVAN realy took its toll on the local sail boat fleet. There have been several auctions and sales by the insurance companies as they clean out these holding yards. Regards your problme - I have talked to a local rigger and he has agreeded to act as an "agent in the woods" to try and locate a Hunter 34 mast and rigging for you. If you send me your email address or phone number I will put him in contact with you if you are interested in taking the next step in the purchase of your boat of interest. RD sundanceh35@cox.net
