practical sailor tunning
Mast tuning does not require brainsurgeon mentality.Simple rule of thumb. Adjust stays equally from port to starbard and feel the difference for further adjustments. On the Cat 27 older models, 3 stays to port and 3 stays to starboard. Step back from boat on aft and port side to view height of mast from distant perspective. Insure mast is not skewed along axis. Its like tuning a guitar, so to speak! Too much tension one side is not good! Take your boat with full main to sail leeward wind and if stays are too loose on off wind side, then tension is not enough. This receipt is not in books, but is practical from average sailors experience. You can get a yard rigger to give you the technical aspects of tensions but I find that this has worked for me!
