I purchased an 87 cat 30 tr last fall, and I think the compression post is begining to rot so my mast will be stepped soon. I noticed wires coming out of the base of the mast and entering the deck (I think it may be the radar, wind and antena wires). How are these disconnected, and are there any other wires that I must be concerned with? Is the fitting on the deck a plug? Dave

Pay me now or pay me later!!

It is possible that the prev. owner installed these items, radar wind communications, and had intentions of possibly adding a junction at a later date when the mast needed to be un-stepped, or was installed by someone that simply installed instruments, and saw the chance of not making a complete job,and not installing a junction block, which should have been done at time of installation. Either way you only have two choices, you can disconect all the wiring at instruments and re-pull them at time of re- stepping which I think is a lot of work when eventually someone will need to add a junction at the base of the mast. Choice two, which I think is the correct choice is to add a junction area at the mast base. I have cut and added junctions for radar and communications, but the wind instruments work from resistance which may alter reading after a splice is made. It may be safer to contact the respective instrument companies and ask if the leads can be cut and re-joined with a terminal block. If the lines can be cut it is not as complicated as one would think. Just stick to the color code of the wires and all will be well. Just in case check with the companies and ask for specific advice for each instrument. Hope this will help. Don Flowers Rockport, Tx.

It may not be an issue

From the questions that you asked, it sounds as if you have not pulled the mast yet. I expect when you do, you may find that the installation was performed properly, and there are electrical connectors on each of your wires between the mast section and the mast step. When the yard pulls up the mast a foot or so, you should be able to disconnet all of your wires for the mast lights, wind meter, radar, and antenna. Be sure that the hole in the deck where the wires pass through is well sealed before you reinstall the mast.
