I am a new owner of a catalina 270. I was looking at my mast rake compaired to other boats in the club and noticed that my mast was raked alot more than the other boats. Is there a good starting point for mast rake. I would also like to know were I can get good tuning numbers for my standing rigging.

rig tuning - mast rake

go to the International Catalina 27 Assoc. website and look at the C270 manuals page 3. You don't need a Loos guage unless you are stepping and unstepping the mast regularly. Gross tune at the dock, fine tune when sailing so you'll be tuned for your local conditions. If your boat has too much weather helm, and the sails are okay, you can move the rake forward to reduce it. http://www.catalina27.org/images/C270Tuning2.htm http://www.sailingsupply.com/articles/body_articles.html

I carry very little rake on mine, but it can be

tricky visually. Is your boat in the water ? & are you comparing to other boats in the water ? Are any of the other boats 270's ? You can use your main halyard as a rude plumb bob. Distance between halyard shackle when at deck and base of mast is approx. of distance masthead is raked back. I should add that changing tension on fore and backstays will not adjust rake but will bend mast fore or aft. In some cases this may be desireable but when tuning I sight up the mainsail track to maintain straight both fore & aft and also side to side. I'm really not positive but think you would have to adjust rake at & with the step.

Thanks Ted!

I just love my 270. I went a bit overboard with my backstay adjuster, 28:1 with a ratchet. I also upgraded to a Harken midrange traveler. The stock Garhauer traveler did the job but the Harken is a lot smoother. In the picture I posted, I'm playing the traveler through the puffs to keep down the weather helm.

Mast Rake

I had quite a bit of rake when I puchased my boat new. (Dealer set-up). The boat tended to have quite a "heading up" problem in puffs on sunny Lake Superior. The following year, I shortened the forestay by way of the roller furling, the rake is less severe, and the rounding up problem is nearly gone, especially if I reef the main early. I think the boat tends to sit stern heavy, somewhat causing excessive rake. Doug

27 mast rake

I had a Catalina 27 for several years and spent quite a bit of time tuning the rig. When we purchased the boat it was set up with more weather helm than I cared for making the boat fatiguing to hand steer for long trips. By removing the mast rake I was able to achieve a more balanced helm. (I do like a small amount of weather helm because I feel it is somewhat safer for a hack sailer like myself). When I was finaly satisfied the mast was virtually straight. Asthetically it was not as pleasing as when she had some rake but she sailed much nicer and with much less fatigue.
