Hello All, It's been awhile since I've been here and so I may be asking a question that's been gone over before, if so, tell me to do a search for these answers and I'll shut up. Anyway, has Catalina spec'd what rake, prebend and cap/lower shroud tension should be tuned for? I remember reading someplace that (I think) on lowers a 50# push/pull at shoulder height should deflecty NGT 1 1/2". This assuming no leeward sag on tack and an "in column" mast. I came across an article talking about setting up according to breaking strength of the wire and that tuning new wire should reflect what the values were for the old wire. Rockin . . . Look at the shape of your mast. I have been told repeatadly that it is not designed to bend. While I am not an expert, I do understand that those mast(s) that tune are ot ovals. I feel that tuning the rig is all you can do. I that's not true, I'll be very interested in what comes forward.

I agree bending aluminum doesn’t give me a warm and fuzzy. The edge of its ductileness is not one that I want to explore myself. happy sails 2 u, bob

Backstay tensioner
So, no, the full masthead rig isn’t really meant to have a whole bunch’a rake to it. And definitely no real bow. However, if you have a backstay tensioner, you do add a little, generally, you don’t get enough to alter mainsail shape much, but you do add a little more tension to your rig and headstay in particular. This is handy if you have a furler. I run the forward babystays a bit lighter than the headshrouds because of the backstay tensioner. Figure, it’s a balance change with a tensioner. For a whisper of mast rake other wise, do it while tuning the rig. Ferg
