Mast a few feet too high for bridge...

Oday 27 Solomon's Island
Mast height > vertical bridge clearance

For the first two years we had our O'Day 27, we kept her at the Washington Marina. The Marina is located just under the Case Bridge at the top of the Washington DC Channel.
NOAA states the bridge clearance as 37 feet.
The O'Day model information states mast above water at 38 ft. 6 in.

We bent the windex once on the first passage under.
We never went out (or back in) at high tide, we always kept everyone on board the boat on one side to produce some heel, and had an anchor and full solar shower ready to use as ballast on the boom if needed. These methods seemed to work, although we held our breath many times watching our VHF anntena scrape each I-beam going under the span.

Interestingly, I think the portion of the bridge nearest the marina buildings is quite higher than 37 feet. The 'channel' marker lights on the bridge are likely the 37 foot areas. Although narrower and/or shallower, there may be other areas you might find offer more clearance. After the first few passes, we began passing under that span and didn't have the same issues.

We left the Washington Marina because of the noise, not the bridge. Constant air traffic to the White House, I-295 traffic and sirens (this goes on 24/7) are not amenable to sailboating, IMHO.

Hello. Please offer any insight. I will read all of the responses and it could help a lot. My sailboat barely gets under a fixed bridge at low tide by approx 2 feet. At high tide, I would be 3-4 feet too tall to get through. Is there anything I can do other than lowering the mast everytime I want to go through or arranging to leave and come back at low tides? Haha I saw this funny youtube video, but I do not think it would actually work. haha Please give any insight on any solutions... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epz6BBZm__0

I once added all my spare fuel and water containers at the end of both the boom and spinnaker pole to heel the 56.5 foot high mast on my Hunter Legend 35 to clear the 55 foot high bridge on 36th street in Miami. Knowing that I needed to do something made it easy to prepare with enough time. Careful with the overall width.

Hunter 30 San Diego
I have a 78 Hunter 30 with a tabernacle mast, I have no problem lowering it to go under the bridge in mission bay San Diego. With the right set up I find it Takes about ten minutes to lower the mast go under and raise it back up. The only real problem is there can be no other boats creating a wake, or the guy fishing in the middle of the channel under the tallest part of the bridge.

The best idea yet is what Steve C has setup on his boat,it won't change how the boat sails compared to cutting the mast and smaller sail, great idea Steve,I would contact Steve for more info on his setup for sure.
