I just purchased a used whisker pole without the hardward. I notice that the front of the mask has tracks formed into the mask. (1986 Hunter 31) Is there a special slide that fits this mask for whisker poles? Ed Welp "Alure" Chesapeake, VA

Isomat Mast?

If your mast is an Isomat, then the only places to find the intended mast ring that I know of are Charleston Spar (info unknown) and Rig Rite (www.rigrite.com). It will be quite expensive and requires a set of turning blocks and cam cleats. I have seen them installed and while they look complicated they are quite efficient. Oh yeah, they wont be cheap!

Hi Ed, if my info is correct Charleston Spar...

took over Isomat. You can reach them at 704/597-1502. They should have a car that will fit your track. It is my understanding that you have to unstep the mast to get it in the track. You may be just as well off installing a fixed attachment on the mast that the whisker pole clips onto. I'm assuming you intend to use the pole for the genoa during down wind sailing. Terry

Save yourself some money

We installed a "pad eye" on either side of the mast using pop rivets. The end of the whisker pole is attached to one or the other pad eye when you want to use the pole.

Don't have to pull mast

The car is available from Isomat. The track does not go all the way to the bottom of the Isomat mast. Remove the stopper screw and car slips right on. Make sure you get the proper nylon glide inserts that fit your mast track. They come in two sizes depending on the mast track dimensions I added the car to my 85 31' works great. An advantage of the car is you just pull it up to store the pole vertically on the mast. I find it very easy to set up and take down the pole single handed while under sail so I use the pole quite a bit, really helps running with the B&R rig. In addition, the car height can be adjusted to match the clew height depending on whether I am flying the genny, the jib or the asymmetrical spinnaker. Because the pole never leaves the mast it can' go overboard; you won't turn your new pole into a liquid investment. If you go this route plan to spend some money. I think the car was about $165 and you will need to throw in about $100 for car control rigging. You will need to add to the mast: two small cheek blocks, two small cam cleats, and two small pad eyes to terminate the car control line. Two small blocks are needed for the car and some line to control the car. During vertical storage the outboard end of pole is held at the base of the mast by snapping it into a small “ bail”. I used a short piece of stainless rigging wire with crimped eyes to form the bail. It attaches to the mast base with small shackles.
