Smoke signals hmmm, not very convenient and decidedly un-nautical - yes signal flags.

Yeah but back in the good old days you are able to still keep going. When all electronics are out, how would one navigate along the coast. Yes in the good old days a simple A M radio with a state highway road map to include the Chesapeake Bay (Virginia) I could triangulate myself with the cross plot of two radio signals. The old RDF?
Just remember in any situation, both need to know in the event of situation of any kind what to do without the prescence of electronics
I do agree electronics should not be 100% substitute for the "old methods" just more convenient. You still have to know how to signal, plot, communicate when the batteries die.

Hi Scott, (moderator) I wanted to add my voice to yours. He was asking for reviews not criticism. I would also like reviews and options. would like a page function so I did not have to actually wear them all the time. But I like the full duplex, works like a telephone so you talk and hear at the same time.

Wow, never thought of these. I am going to order some when their back in stock.

I remember way-back in the old days that signals, stopwatch and plans were all we had even on shore. Then about 20 years ago my wife and I purchased cell phones. we love them so much we still have them. Even shopping in Walmart; i.e. "ring, hi, headed to the car, ok on my way too, love you bye".

Gosh, so much better than hand signals. Especially when that big burley man standing in front of my wife thinks I trying to get a date with him! Ok, enough..

At our marina, We have a boat ramp at the marina for mostly power boats. We call it the "Ramp of Divorce". Headsets would help a lot of those people.

You luddites who diss the headsets also navigate by compass, sextant and stopwatch right? We cruise full time and anchor a LOT. Headsets give us so much more nuance to discuss what we're doing. I could write several paragraphs on all the subtle ways we can DISCUSS what we see and what the helmsman sees on the plotter and depth sounder. And theres that little issue of 'hands free'. I have a manual windlass (how many of you luddites have an electric windlass that is heavily exposed to salt spray and failure?) and I use one hand to crank the chain and one hand to spray the washdown. Perhaps I should do this naked and swing my junk for signals?
Get a grip people, the headsets are one of the best tools we use regularly. When one battery quits, we can resort to signals, signals arent rocket science, so its easy to switch. But it is soooo much nicer to use the comms. Now go practice your sunsights like real mariners.

Thanks all for your helpful (and somewhat unhelpful) responses. It looks as if there is not a whole lot of options out there but you all did give me some good pointers and I appreciate the responses from those that did try to be helpful! Looks like the Wild Oats will be getting a pair of SPH10-10 for her belated Christmas Present.

Since we are talking communications, does anyone know of a headset/handheld marine VHF that will fit over your ear like the ones above? I wear hearing aids and have some difficulty hearing the ram Mike and my handheld clearly. Don't mean to hijack the thread but any solutions would be helpful.
