I have a 40x16 ft slip in Pike's Bay Marina, just south of Bayfield, Wisconsin on Lake Superior, gateway to the Apostle Islands. Sailing season is May 1-October 31. My total cost for the year which includes launch, slip rental, haulout, powerwash and storage on the hard is about $4,000.00 for the year (I am anticipating an increase for 2007). Along with slip rental I get full use of the clubhouse which includes a ship's store, private showers, full kitchen, patio, 52 inch tv, wireless internet. Slip amenities include cable TV, wifi, water and electricity (30A and 50A). You may pay a little more at Pike's Bay but it is worth it. The staff and service are excellent and the clubhouse is the best in town.

Road Tool Here in Arkansas, we sail year round, it does get cold though, The sailors rule the lake from Labor Day weekend to Memorial Day weekend, there are power boats in the summertime. Plenty of room for both of us. the lakes deepest spot is 220 foot deep. There are some shallow spots, not that many though. There are ALOT of coves to hide out in. I'm playing a game this winter trying to find a new cove evey weekend. All in all it's a great lake. I think we have over 1200 miles of shoreline. Tim Welsh Hunter 34 S/V Cabo Wabo

Winter on the Chesapeake

As a new sailor from the south, I'm interested in how bad the winter is on the Chesapeake. Do any 'normal' people sail during the winter?

There is a whole freeze out series of racing out of Annapolis. They call the frost bite series I believe.

T2, winter on the chesapeake can be like winter in

North Carolina. Ashville can get pretty cold and snowy, Wilmington rarely gets much frost. The bay at Havre de Grace sometimes freezes from shore to shore and some winters we don't get any ice at all. Annapolis almost never gets any ice but sometimes it snows. Norfolk, Newport News, Hampton ,VA rarely get any snow it never ices up. I have seen shirt sleeve days in January and late snowstorms on Easter. Some folks keep their boats in the water all winter this far up the bay and sail when the weather permits. But 34 degree water hurts when the spray hits your face.

Ross nailed it...

but also depends on where your boat is docked for the winter. Most of the rivers and creeks do ice up around Annapolis, where most marina are. Getting in and out to sail isn't an option. Few do it tho. I say you gotta be alittle "not normal" to be out there...;) I usually winter in New Bern and am really missing it already. Baltimore is too COLD already.
