Oh yeah... forgot to mention

Mosquitoes the size of small crows, summer nights that can dip down to 50F, 6 months off season with half as many feet of snow... and we all live in igloos! Did I mention we only have about 40 slips?

Atlanta - Lake Lanier

I keep my Hunter 27 at Aqualand on Lake Lanier, which has the (dubious?) distinction of being the largest inland maria in the country (2250 slips). The weather is generally mild enough that you can sail year round, with the possible exception of January and February (unless you are a real die hard). In fact I went sailing Saturday and the weather was 69 degrees and clear. I have a 30' x 14' slip with fresh water and shore power. the slip is about $600 a quarter and $4.50 a month for power. The only downside is the water is from an artisian well which means it has a limited supply. Hence, no boat washing with marina water. The haul outs are $10 per foot roundtrip and $9 a day (for up to a month) in the self service yard. $50 to drop the mast. The price seems pretty resonable to me, since I have a friend in Daytona Beach,FL that lives in a condo with a marina. he decided to buy his slip and it cost him $100,000. I hear that in lower Florida slip rental can be $750 a month.

I am in the PST Marina. I have and end slip (on a "T"). Water, no electricity, although I can hook up for the occassional overnight stay or to run power tools while working aboard, year 'round sailing (in fact, we just did four days for Thanksgiving, around 70 for highs and 50 for lows, great wind), great facilities (bathrooms with showers, laundry, ships store), great people who work there, great neighbors in the slips (it seems everyone smiles as soon as they hit the marina). We pay $5.50/ft/month. We get a 10% discount for paying annually, Our 33'er runs about $2,000 per year. Larger slips with full time electricity run around $7.50/ft/month. All in all, we love it there.

Oriental Slips

Whittaker Creek had a few slips in the 30 foot range, I think Knute gets about $200.00 a month on annual contract up to $250+ per month to month. Their is a small marinia down town under the hwy 55 bridge to the right, they have floating docks I think he gets from $180 to $200 per month including water and electricty don't know the name but look for big crane. Turn at First Citizens Bank go one block behind bank turn left and 100 yards on right. (5' to 6' dpth) Owner is reported to be a good marine engine mechanic. If you want cheap, quite and close to the Neuse & Pamlico you can go out to broad creek to a place called the Boone docks he has a couple of slips available for $400 per quarter including electric and water and bath house. (about five miles from Down town Oriental slip depth 6 feet.) No frills but very quite. Paul Fairbanks is the dock master. Pul usually features a free breakfast with the dockmaster on Sunday mornings to get slip owners started for the day. You can also check www.towndock.com sometime you find slip owners in oriental harbor and pecan grove who will rent their slips for short term stays. Hope this helped.

Tampa Bay Area

Here in the Tampa Bay Area, developers have bought up many of the marinas to build high end Condos. My marina charges $12/ft per month with a 35' minimum plus $15/month for electricity. The problem is, the channel to the Bay needs dredging and you can't even think about going out or coming in anywhere close to low tide.

Lake Huron

I pay $1,400 for a 36 ft slip which includes water, electricity, cable TV and a nice grassy area with small shade trees at the dock for eating on land. Also the marina common areas include a nice parking area not too far from the boat, showers and a head and city-gas grills. Eight grills in all spread across the marina. It's BYO on a plastic folding picnic table for some but the marina has a number of nice wooden ones as well. The season is from May 15 to Oct 31. Most people are out by mid October. Winter layup and a bottom wash is $1.25 a square foot and that includes putting back in in the spring. That comes to $350 for winter storage for me. This is a small marina (by some standards)but accesses the Great Lakes which are some pretty nice cruising grounds.

Potomac River

At the Quantico Marina, inside the Marine Corps base, I pay $4.70 per foot per year, free water and some electricity. No haul out or services, which can be had an hour north or south. Best deal in the area, in my opinion.

Newport Beach Slip rates

In Newport Beach, I pay $22.50 per foot per month plus electricity. Our slips are owned by my yacht club so the prices are below market. The going rate is upwards of $30.00 per foot and the harbor has generally a 100% occupancy. Most marinas have a multiple year waiting list.

whats the deal with dockominiums?

Are these sorta like a bunch of boaters getting together and buying or building a marina. Or is it more like buying a slip space, and paying some kinda HOA fee? If so, what are those fees running?

At the Top of the Bay...

Warren, we're putting in new floating docks for 2007. My slip fee will be approx. $2,900 for a 35 foot slip (H34)(water, but add'l chg for electric). Over in Georgetown on the Sas two seasons ago a 35 foot slip was $3,200 to $3,400 (water & 30 amp). HdG is about the same or more.

Skipjack Cove

We're in a 40ft slip at Skipjack Cove on the Sassafras and pay $3500 for the season. We winter over in Baltimore at Inner Harbor East for $315 month, also a 40 ft slip. Cable TV is free and electric is extra in both places. Try the web sites for the bay marinas, most list their rates. BTW Farley Marina AKA Trump Marina charges apx $4000 for a 30 ft slip. Transient rates are $4.50 a ft and that's why we've been on the bay for the last 6 yrs.
