Here on the east coast, many of us have are about to end our sailing season. It's been a good one for me and I hope the same for you. I'll soon receive a slip renewal notice from my marina for next year and I'd like to compare notes with what others pay around the country. Although I expect my fees to rise, I currently pay about $2600 per year for a 30'x 12'.5" wet slip that includes water and electricity. Since I haul out each December and go back in around April 1st, I also pay about $150 per month additional for land storage (hauling/blocking/power washing are extra). This is for a Hunter 28.5. What are you paying?

Slip fees

I have a slip that is 10 x 20 at which I keep my 22-footer. I have 20' piers on both sides, free electricity, water, cable TV hook-up and pump-out. There is also a shower and toilets ashore. I pay $150/month ... have been for the last 3 years. I understand this to be a bit cheap based on current standards - should be about $200/month. My marina on Lake Travis in Texas is a condominium - slips are owned by individuals, I am renting from one of those owners. I don't haul out here - 12 month sailing season. Yeah for Texas ..... so much better than the short season in New York from whence I came.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I feel better about what I pay

I pay $1500 a year for a 40' by 14' slip, water and electric included. Those fees are expensive for my area because the Marina next door is $700 a year. That marina doesn't have water and the electric is strange (20 amp). The yacht club in Colonial Beach is slightly more expensive than mine.

I currently store at my partners house but she is looking to leave the partnership and I have to lok into the pssibility of storage for the long NY winter. From what I have seen it pays to leave LI behind , longer sailing season, cheaper storage and on and on. I hope to retire in 10 years and would like to either move south and sail a lake or perhaps become a trailor sailor. I am looking into some comunities where I could put up a small house, cottage or log cabin roughly 1000 to 1200 sq.ft.I then would be able to spend more time in and around the water for a longer period during the year.Does anyone have any input into some possibilities.

Things might be a little more out here, but you

tend to hang on to a slip if you can get it. Rate increases every year by the CPI to maximum of 4% but every 5th year they can raise it more to cover any increase in the CPI not recovered by annual increases with approval of county board of supervisors. Space Max LOA* Monthly Slip Rent Wait list (approximate) 24' 10' - 24' $249 8 Months 28' 23' - 28' $323 4 Months 29' 25' - 29' $347 1 Year 33' 29' - 33' $468 1.5 Years 38' 33' - 38' $579 4 Years 43' 38' - 43' $677 6 Years 48' 43' - 48' $776 7 Years 53' 48' - 53' $893 8 Years 58' 53' - 58' $967 9 Years 63' 58' - 63' $1,170 14 Years End Tie 65' - 85' $19.71 per foot 10 Years *Length overall including ALL extensions

Bristol, RI rates...

In Narragansett Bay, half-way betweeen Providence and Newport, RI, the rates climb every year. (I wish my income did likewise..) This past summer season for a 800# MOORING I paid $1650 including their $400 "discount" for winter storage customers. This is truly just a sales tactic to capture the winter market. The summer season includes launch service. Rarely is there transient dock space to load/unload or do a washdown. Pumpouts are $5. My winter storage this year is $1520, up $3 per foot from last year (40' sailboat). Both the summer and winter fees must be paid in full early to avoid additional charges. Nice people here, but every season brings a price increase with no increase in service or facilities. I know these are better rates than some, but much worse than others. When it breaks my budget, I will move or sell my boat.

$$$$ Chicago

In Burnham Harbor, Chicago I paid about $4000 for May 15 to Oct 15 for a slip , electric and water. This is for a 36 foot boat in a 35 ft slip. The view is great but facilities are pitiful. There are 3 showers, 1 toilet and 1 urinal in a harbor for about 1000 boats. And they close the restroom at night! Chicago politics at work. It seem like they put no money back into the harbor. If you have a Chicago address expect to pay about 20% less. I am a suburbanite so I pay more. I got word that fees will increase 8% in 2007.

Interesting comparisons

I'm wondering if anyone gets screwed worse than us? 6-7 month season (Rhode Island) max water temp 70 deg prevailing wind always into the bay from the direction we want to go - out the bay $140/foot pus electricity (equiv. to $12/ft/month) winter storage fee - depends on boat size -$1500 for a 40 ft hull

We pay $1350.00 for the year April to April. Have water and metered Electric which is about $10.00 month year round. If you haul it is $7.00 per foot and $100.00 a month for winter storage. I stay in all year round and haul every other year to paint the bottom. This is for 27 foot boat in a 30 foot slip. We are well protected and easy acess to the Bay.

Slip fees

Before we bought our slip at Ferry Slip Dockominiums, our Sea Lord was charging us $1500-$1550 per season for a 35 foot slip. No charge for water, electric or cable. A nice, 2-story club house with CLEAN heads and showers, laundry room, kitchen, tv room, common room, deck over-looking the Thames River. Winter storage fees for owners are $26.00/ft, for renters, $34.00/ft. A slip costs between $20,000-$30,000, and property taxes on the slips are around $300.00. The annual assessment was $300.00, going to $400.00. Compared to the jokers nearby, these rates are a steal. The only downside is the rocking caused by the ferrries and other commercial traffic, and the exposure to anything coming in from the South. For us, it is well worth it. I pay 4.00 I ft (non-livaboard, 4.50 for livaboard) that includes electricity, water, bath/shower/laundry, floating docks, and soon cable tv. You have to pay for a year at a time and you get one month free, so pay for 11 get 1. Its a nice deal if your military, dependent, or retiared military/DOD.

Town marina in the Great South Bay

Charges me 37.00 per ft. from Mar 15th to Nov 15th with water, electric and security and in the winter if I keep it in the water a private marina charges 20.00 a foot with electric and they supply the bubble system if the water freeze's,if I put her up on the hard its 32.00 a ft. and the place I found lets me paint my own bottom but wait..... you have to be ready to be put back in the water by Mar 27th or he fines you 25.00 a day. I've been hauling out cause for the extra 400.00 I get more work done and have piece of mind so it's been about 2200 for summer and winter for a 32 ODay Oh BTW the waiting list for the town marina is 5 to 8 years for boats 28ft and up. And you have to be a resident,so when I get my property tax bill every year I don't complain cause I know where some of my taxes are going.
