Ahoy All,

Outside of ActiveCaptain.com does anyone of other places that have reviews of boatyards and marinas? I would love to have a second source of information.

Thanks,
SM

goggle the marinas you are looking at individually and read the reviews posted there

You realize Active Captain on reality is not one source, but in reality reviews by many cruisers.

Active captain is an unbiased crowd source of information. The owner of active captain refuses to moderate off poor reviews, and rather coaches poorly scores marinas in how to read comments and improve their own review score organically. You should listen to him on the sailloot podcast. I can't remember which episode but there aren't too many yet and should be easy to find. It's worth listening to to understand why active captain is such a great service to boaters and marinas alike.

This is for the most part true.

However there are some glowing reports on places that I would not let my kid take his tricycle for repair work. Which means that the owner or employees are putting false reports in.

Yes well, that's true but then you don't understand the purpose of s rating system. Whether it's active captain or Amazon, I always read the comments on the lowest rates comments. You learn why they were dis-satisfied with the product or service and not just looking at the average score. Sometimes the complaints are just silly or based on lack of knowledge. I don't actually read the glowing reports. Because they are 5 star, you already know it's an excellent review.

TMI

Reviews are reviews. You never know who wrote them. You get what you pay for.

It's the price we pay for all this information. Some people complain about it, but they're not old enough to remember the "good old days" when you actually had to read a book or actually go there to find out conditions. Gee, what a silly thing to complain about, TMI! :)

Now you can get on the internet, and ask a question and get an almost immediate reply.

Sometimes all it shows is how lazy the OP really is, no research, homework or trying a search engine (how many transmission position questions are there?!?:), (how many boating people these days really don't know about Active Captain?); (how many people can't use Google?). Other-times it opens up great discussions that can be learning experiences for everyone who reads them. Sometimes, like this morning on another boating forum, the OP asks a question and argues with the answers (in this case he asked how far offshore the east coast USA he should sail to avoid the Gulf Stream, completely missing the point that not only does the GS move daily, but the stream and the land curve!!!).

Have you tried Yelp, too?
