My manual bilge pump does nothing. I have tried to get it out but I need another set of hands to get the screws out. In the meantime, does any one knows what brand it is or were to get the flapper valves or diaphragm kit?? It seems the most popular one is the guzzle 400 but I don't like to ass u me.
Thanks

At the yard I go to, there are many boats, and many good looking manual bilge pumps
Th H33 I scavanged from did not have one, but I would like to know from other members that read this ( people with similar boats) where would the ideal place for instalation be.
Also, does it have a hose also (?) and does it feed into the bilge?
Is there enough room for another hose down there?
If you can help with this, saves me the squeezing into the other boats and try trace the path of one
Thanks

Does your boat still have the pump forward for emptying the holding tank overboard? I think they are the same pump, maybe 'Whale Gusher'.

Jorge, the pump on my boat is on the port side of the cockpit. And behind the coaming. Really difficult to get at.

Anyone else has a H33 (1982) with a manual bilge pump?
Where is it located
On the subject of bilges: I have 2 bilges in my boat: a log one behind the mast and a small little one in front.
The large one is usually dry ( good sign), but the little one has water almost always
WQhere does that water come from?

Jorge, I am afraid I do not have any photos of it, but the one on my 78 33' is Port side about even with the wheel (fore and aft). It is a WHALE GUSHER 10. The hose runs along the port side (under the quarterbirth, stove, cooler box, and sink) into the aft portion of the bilge. I purchased the parts to replace the baffles and stoppers but have yet to tackle that job.

The one that was used for pumping out the old black water system is a WHALE GUSHER 8, located under the starboard cockpit seat. I did rebuild this one and use it now to empty my gray water tanks.

Thanks! I also have the one next to the waste bladder bag, to pump out waste
Now I understand you have the Manual bilge pum on the port side... is it just past the motor compartment? into the aft portion of the bilge... that is the large one, correct? Behind the mast
So you have to crawl back there to use ? I guess only in an emmergency, I suppose...
I think you have it on the flat part, near the quadrant...

This is not my boat, its a 1980 33' I looked at, but you see where the bag is for the blue line. Behind that is where my manual bilge pump is located. the actual pump assembly is inside, but there is a face plate on the outside that has a metal door. Inside the door is a socket you put the pump handle into to operate the pump.

You can look at this:

to get a better understanding of what the pump looks like.

I found a photo of where the manual bilge hose goes into the bilge

The white bilge hose you see here comes out from under the sink into the aft portion of the bilge.

There are a few reasons why a manual bilge pump won't work. One is the end of the hose in the bilge is not below the water line (if there is water to be pumped). Another is because the rubber diaphram is cracked or broken and hence the pump cannot suck. Another reason is because you may have pumped up something that is lodged in the one of the check valves (keeping it open so it won't seal) that is located where the intake hose or exit hose is located so that there is a air leak in the system and so it is impossible to get suction for lack of a seal.

I don't know if this will help, but here goes. On Midnight Sun (and I think I am the only original owner) there is a manual pump in the cockpit on the port side. It is NOT the same pump that came on the boat to pump out the holding tank. (bag in my case) The one in the cockpit is aluminum and the one for the holding tank was plastic with a built in "Y" gate. If you haven't replaced the diaphram in the last ten years, it probably won't pump. Mine failded because the screws holding it together corroded apart.

In answer to the question about whether there is room for another hose, there is. Part of the ORC Cat 1 racing requirements, require a second manual bilge pump installed below deck. Mine is on the forward facing galley bulkhead. Bilge pumps never enter your mind untill they don't work. As those of you that read my account of the 2010 Mexico race remember, Both manuals and both elecrtic pumps failed, and we had to bail every four hours for three days coming home. My advice on manual pumps is to try them quarterly, and on electrics, re-do the electrical connections every year, and before any passage. I will say that since I started filling butt connectors with RTV prior to crimping, I have had no problems. Wish that was my idea, but it wasn't. It does work.

RTV is silicone rubber.
RTV stands for Room Temperature Vulcanizing. The initials have become the name something like Velcro. Check the labels. Some release acetic acid while curing which can cause corrosion if you're using RTV on metal parts.

Found the problem.

All rubber parts were O.K. The bottom part of the housing had a leak and the salt water coroded the aluminum housing, so that the rubber diaphram would not seal properly. Also the clamp was loose. Rebuilding the housing with epoxy and after sanding should have a good surface. Althou it is 30 years old, parts are plentiful. Kits run 30 to 40 dollars and new pumps are in the 250 range. Made in Ireland it says.

I have found plenty of parts available. A quick google search under Whale gusher 10 listed over 10 suppliers of parts kits, from $33.00 to $40.00. for the complete valve rebuilding kit. Diaphram is also available. Check and see what brand of manual pump your boat came equipped with.
