Hi friends,
I need a new and better holding anchor for my Catalina 30. I ran into Mantus Anchors online and am curious if anyone has any experience with them. They are new in 2012 and the big box stores do not yet have them. They are very similar to Rocna and Manson Supreme, but the Mantus site has some amazing truck stopping footage.
I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Fogg

I bought a Mantus and love it. It sets and holds as well as my Manson Supreme but also breaks down to lie flat in my anchor locker. Lots of info over on Sailnet about it.

I think MainSail also has one and has done some testing with it.

Rufus,

My bad typing or proofing made the future seem impossibly distant. Thanks for your help.

Tim, Thanks for the feedback. I'll take a look at Sailnet.

lol just couldnt pass up the oppertunity, where do you usually anchor? ive currently got a 26lb claw and anchor in sandy or muddy (screw you bp) bottoms and it works wonderful, i see alot of over priced anchors on alot of snobby yacht club boats at raft ups that drag and make a huge problem while i sit secure, idk even what brand mine is lol. then again im smart enough to head home when i see a squall predicted and im in an anchorage thats packed like a clown car with these yahoos, usually hear the story about having to send divers down to untangle the anchors and how everyone is fighting for a fiberglass guy to repair toe rails, deck joints, and cleats.

I own one, a tremendous anchor that actually sets slightly faster than a Rocna or Manson Supreme. The big benefit I see is that they can be broken down for stowage and used as a storm anchor. Ours does not fit the roller as well as our Rocna so we still use the Rocna as our primary. If the Mantus fit as well it would be our primary in a heart beat.

You can buy them through Amazon if you can't find any other place. Prices look very attractive compared to Manson or Rocna for similar weight sizes. For a little over 500 bucks you can get an 85 pounder for a storm anchor. Practical sailor just reviewed them in a recent article along with several other small anchors. I think their only negative was having to assemble it if you need it in a hurry.

I have a 45# Mantus. It was shipped to my house for less $ than a Manson from West Marine. Assembly took me about 45' but I'm probably slower with a wrench than most. They supply a heavy grease that you slather on the parts before tightening. A little messy. It doesn't fit the bow roller as perfectly as my old 33# Bruce. But as they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and the Mantus does stick to the bottom. It really jerks the boat around when it sets. Never experienced that with the Bruce. No movement when backing down at 2000 rpm. This is in soft sand with a lot of grass.

What kind of roller would fit a Mantus or Rocna?

Looks like great value but how does one know what roller it would fit? Is it a trial an error thing?

I'm in the Market for a new anchor as well. Does anyone know if the Mantus or Rocna will fit the OP's bow sprit?

I haven't looked into whether it will fit the bowsprit on my Catalina 30TR. I'm still wondering about size. On Sailnet.com, Mantus shows a rail mount that would deal with the issue. I like it because I stay on a mooring and anchors sticking out on the bowsprit run the risk of tangling with the mooring pendants running from the P&S cleats. Currently I have two 4" PVC tubes cable tied to the forward tilting members of the bow pulpit. That keeps both my current hooks away from tangles. I also have no windlass and weight is a concern.

I second ( or third) the favorable reviews of the Mantus anchor. It sets easily and solidly - don't get your fingers between the rode and the cleat, the line will snap tight when the anchor digs in.
The 25 lb mantus fits fine on my Catalina 28 roller. It looked like it would be too big at first - it is a beast - but I've grown used to it quickly.

I read, somewhere that to size an anchor, multiply boat length by 1.5 to get the anchor weight in pounds. Where does that come from? It takes no account of the anchor design and therefore i take that equation with a pinch of salt. On the other hand, all the major anchor makers seem to undersize there anchors when looking at there sales pitch. So for a 20000lb 37 foot boat, what would you recommend?

Thanks Stu, read through that thread. I have never seen a safe working load list for each anchor manufacturer. It would still appear to me that quoted anchor size per boat length is on the small side.

Gone through the blurb by 4 major manufactures of modern anchors and for my boat they recommend anywhere between 40 -66 pound anchors. Rocna appears to provide the most details of what harsh conditions their anchor can cope with, a couple of the manufactures do not even list a wind speeds. I guess its a lottery buying an anchor.
