Assumed knowledge

Capt. Ed, I used to teach woodworking, woodturning and furniture making and found the exact same results.
Women dont have the same ego problems that men have and are very open to something they have never done before. Men, on the other hand, are born with this inherited instinctive knowledge, or at least they think they are.

If we make it legal to shoot offenders

Then they will learn. So it looks like it up to the "more knowledgeable" to teach, one way or the other. Education is the key. Just like the kids on the streets . No responsibility and no repercussions. Nothing. Get a ticket and go to a marble building(court house) and play the game, let's make a deal. what are we teaching them anyway? The people must educate the young. My daughter will be getting a ski/wake-board boat soon and you had better believe that I will be teaching her the "rules of the road". And she thought driving a car was tough. I taught her the proper way to drive and explained to that her she will develop her own bad habits on her own, but at least I will have taught her the right and proper way. Same goes for boating and the "rules of the road". Courtesy is first and foremost. Larger vessels ALWAYS have the right of way. I don't care who is where or what they are doing. And she even asked for my help with her boating experience. Is she in for a rude awakening. I'll try to make it interesting and fun at the same time. Wish me luck.
Keep it up,

Breaking wind

while there are still idiot pilots

they tend to remove themselves from the gene pool rather quickly. I would hate to see a federal intervention but perhaps a state by state regulation, oh an regarding the previous post I am pro gun and I have a concealed pistol license and I think more people should carry, now there is a lesson in legislation.. at least in MI. to obtain a CCW you need to 1. not have been a criminal in the past. 2. pass a written and performance (shooting) test. 3. pass a background check. its good for 3 years then repeat if you want it again. Simple and it works. anything involving federal regulation will not be simple or cost effective for anyone.

tony on ultralights

they can only be flown in uncontrolled airspace,Here is a topic for discussion, should we have a waterway classification system?
Most on here likely don't know the airspace system so I'll sum it up

class A = Boeing country 18,000ft and above

Class B = Big airports Ohare, Atlanta, LAX, etc

class C = regional airports, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Grand Rapids

class D = smaller airports (but usually have a control tower) at least during daytime.

class E = Everywhere!that isn't mentioned above but is still served by air traffic controll.

Class G = uncontrolled (usually from the ground up to 500 ft as long as its not to close to one of the above airports.

it's a lot more in depth and complicated than this but this is the general picture of how it's laid out.

different airspace often requires different equipment on the airplane and or aditional training.

could you see having to file a "sailing plan" with the federal Boat Control before departing, then not deviate from that plan?

that would..exscuse my crudeness....SUCK ASS!!

there is a good reason that F.A.A. stands for the Federation to Abolish Aviation! it has become so regulated and expensive that the # of pilots in America is declining by leaps and bounds every year.

How effective is licencing??

Just this weekend I had a guy in a 42' sailboat that was motoring through the anchorage almost run me and my family down in our dink. My wife alerted me to the danger (I was rowing therefore facing the stern) about the same time someone on the sailboat yelled at us. I hit the brakes and backed up a few feet. Seconds later, as the boat passed within 4' of my bow I reminded the "captain" that he needed to maintain a sharp lookout. He proceeded to tell me that he was the priveledged vessel because he had windage (?) and that I could stop faster than he could. I noticed that this boat was flying the burgee of a club that I recently joined. I went on the club's website and the membership directory indicates that this guy has a USCG Captain's Licence. I know the part about avoiding a collision regardless as to who has the "right of way" and I did my part by avoiding it. Someone needs to remind this @$$hole that boats under auxillary power must give way to un-powered, wind powered and anchored vessels.

Tom , I think that the least he could have done

when he first saw you was to give you a whistle. He was correct that you had the best maneuverability but giving you a "Heads-up" would have been reasonable. When the kids are playing ball in the street I give them a very short toot when I am still half a block away. They never resent it.

I'd question the authenticity of the license

With behavior like that, I'd be doubt he really has one.

I doubt it would help

Nearly everyone who drives a car has attended some sort of training course and has a license. That still doesn't stop people from driving like nuts does it? Enforcement is another issue. One or two patrol boats per harbor can't cover the necessary area to do all the myriad tasks of policing as well as rescue.

I was out yesterday and had two separate incidences withing an hour. Both involving powerboats...one with a bunch of drunks on it who blew by us a boat length away at full throttle forcing us to turn into his wake and another bone head who maintained a collision course with us (we were under sail and he was approaching us at a 90 degree angle) through two course adjustments we made to avoid him. It was like he was trying to force a collision.

I should have turned both of them in to the harbor master. I am sure he was busy trying to save the lives of other idiots like the two young guys kayaking into three foot swells without life jackets on board their kayaks or the six people in the 13 foot whaler we saw heading out too.

Perhaps it is just natural selection at work, but I wish they would stay away from me and mine.

Ross...

His manueverability was not hindered at all. I've been in exactly the same situation he was in. He had plenty of room to alter course towards my stern. A few degrees is all it would have taken. Another option he had would have been to kick his tranny into neutral for a few seconds. Either action would have avoided a collision. Instead he just plowed ahead without altering his course and yelled at me to look out for him. That's the kind of thing I'd expect from a drunk powerboater, not a USCG licenced captain.

Tom, You can check his certificate number. Every

licensed boater I know publishes his certificate number and class. This is a matter of pride, not a secret to be kept.

Easy to get Capt's license

The CG no longer administers the test. The sea school does. The same schools that advertise that they guarantee everyone passes.
How's that for a kick in the ass.

Capt. Ed

Beg your pardon on Captain's test

As a Captain that took the test thru a second party I know what it takes to pass. A score of 90% on the rules for the road is not easy to do without extensive study . Then you take the deck and general at 70% ,and have to attest to sea time . Now that does not let off the hook some one that passed and is still not responsible .I know that about 70% of first time test takers flunk , The education service will stick with you to you pass . Not bad seeing most adults haven't taken a real test in years . If you think these courses are a joke try it and then let me know .OH buy the way can you pass a drug test and have several people attest to you character and pass the TWIC background exam . Now that still does not let a dumbbell of the hook . Captain Ed Salem MA.

No need to beg

As a former Capt. - 100 Ton Master, I passed the exam. No problem. I took it when the CG gave the exams. I have seen people pass the nav and plotting section without even picking up a chart. They just memorized all of the questions.
I also have a TWIC card. You dont have to do anything to get a TWIC card other than fill out the application. Or did I miss something? I also get drug screened regularly. Sometimes twice a month.
You make it sound so difficult. I never study for a urine test. Just drink coffee and you will pee.
