I'm in the process of replacing my blown out main on my 1981 H33. I've been shopping around the net and I'm getting all kinds of quotes for all kinds of sails. I've decided that I first need to decide on the weight of the cloth. I've been told by one loft that 6.9 oz is the best and another said that 8 oz is best. I'm a cruiser who MIGHT race once a year but performance is still important to me. What's more important is the quality and durability of the sail (these things aint cheap). I'm guessing the 8oz is too heavy and the 6.9 is too light (I have a tendency to sail in 15kts + regularly). Any suggestions appreciated, also, your thoughts on fully battened vs. conventional battens for a cruiser.

My new Main is 6.6 oz.

I replaced my aging 1981 H33 Main with a new NORTH SAILS 6.6 oz. Premium NorDac sail. It uses the latest concept of battens, 2 long and 2 regular sizes. This way I get the shape to hold at the top of the sail. I sail Lake Ontario with winds 10 to 15 knots, but occasionally higher. I cruise and race both, and seem to do quite well racing the boats with their "go-fast" sails. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty
