I have a 1985 Pearson 303 and need a new main halyard. I measured the halyard with a caliber and got a 7/16 diameter measurement, the jib halyard measures 3/8 diameter. Does this sound right? Do my fellow 303 owners have two different diameter halyards?

The main halyard is sometimes up-sized for comfort because it is handled so much. It is the same size as on my Pearson 32.

I replaced my 85 P34 rope & wire halyards w/1/2" VPC from NE Ropes. If doing again, I would use 7/16" or 3/8". 1/2" works fine but is overkill.

halyard size

Both main and jib usually come stock in the same size, but there is no set rule Some sailors use different sizes other than stock, but there is no set rule. Go with whatever works best for you and you are comfortable with

ok, so I saw this and read main 'sheet' instead. When I bought my boat it had 7/16 halyards for both main and jib. Original equip. was wire halyards so the sheaves were far to small for such large line. Ii have since replaced both with 5/16 Warpspeed which works very well for wire halyard replacement. Far less friction and chafe in the system as a result.

Thanks for all the replys. I went with the 7/16 because its easier for me to grip, but it turns out after some research I could have used a few different lines for a halyard. I don't know if you all know but there is a company named Rig-Rite that carries spars and hardware for Pearsons. Thanks again!
Hope everyone has a great season!

Rig-Rite is great. Have replaced a few parts using them.

yes and if you are replacing a rope & wire with just rope, you should replace the sheaves so you don't abrade the rope with the sheave chewed up from the wire.
