Maiden Voyage....

Well, this maiden had her first voyage of 2007 -- finally! It was making me nuts to have my boat back in the drink last week and it being too cold to sail her. I decided today was the day anyway. Temps in the high 40's and light winds. Coldish but doable. That wonderful Yanmar started right up after about 2-sec of cranking. Ran as smooth as a kitten, particularly with the new cutlass bearing. After the engine warmed up I headed out into the bay. Nice to see the old engine could easily cruise at 5.5 kts at 2100 rpms. At one point I pushed it to WOT and was able to develop 3300 rpms so I assume compression is still good. I decided to bend on my small 120 genoa. I have not used this sail in years, although it's in very good condition. With winds around 7-8 kts, the boat was doing 5+ kts, and I was really surprised at that with a small headsail. Nice to be sailing again and hope you all are, too!

Good for you

Good for you, and happy to hear you got out. I would have a hard time dealing with the 40 stuff, but would probably go anyway. Heading for Pennsacola next Wed. morning, for a few days. Like you, I can't stand it any longer.

Warren, good for you... I noticed your empty spot on the hard this last weekend! Got all my work done so, hopefully I'll splash this week and will go out myself. See you out there... happy sailing! Steph

Warren look at the HP curves for your

engine and then you can convert the HP/speed numbers to pounds of thrust per minute. from there you can sail at the same speeds and determine the power of your sails. We plan to splash down on monday the 16th. Happy sailing Ross

So it's not just me?

Sure glad there are others suffering with me. I am waiting until 5 May for boats in. Snow is coming down again. Nothing but slush out there. I hope the lake thaws. What is all this fuss about global warming?

I'm suffering

Sitting here in Minnesota right now and the snow is coming down and it's about 30 degrees. It won't get above 40 this week and more snow is predicted for Saturday. I don't know whether to cry or throw something. Why, oh why do I live in this cursed state??? I wanna be somewhere warm, sailing, the wind in my hair, the sun on my face...

too much sailing

We've been out the past three weekends, overnighting at yacht clubs where we have reciprocal privileges, so we decided to give it a rest this coming weekend and play a round of golf instead.

Weather Problems

I feel sick... The last week of March we sent on the boat cruising along the TN river from Rogersville to Pickwick landing and back. It got to 87 degrees one day and young people were swimming. Then the cold front came through. I was at my brothers cabin in the mountains and had to use the 4 wheel drive to get up his steep driveway in the snow. Now back at work I have allergys or a cold..maybe missing the boat??? It is supposed to be a warm but wet weekend so I'll get to go sailing as rain usually means wind around here. Unfortunately beautiful blue skies usually means light and varible winds. It does seem strange that the only time that I've seen snow in three or four years was over Easter weekend!!! After carefull consideration if I have to walk on white powder I prefer the white beaches around Panama City ,Fl to the snow covered frozen lakes of MN. The only advantage of the MN snow is no biting flies!!!
