Question. Has anybody used an Algae-X or similiar magnetic fuel conditioner in their fuel system. Has it worked satisfactory?

algae-x report

My new Hunter 36 and my previous Morgan O/I 41 both have/had algae-x systems. On the Hunter I used the generator pickup in the tank to make a closed loop through the algae-x and racor and back to tank. Works great. On Morgan all fuel problems ceased with the installation of the algae-x. On the new Hunter no fuel problems to date. I use the catalyst too to help condition the fuel. I let it run while sailing and fuel sloshing around. Highly recommended.

Magic dust

There has been lots written about these in the archives. Long story short - save your money. Any fuel pump running continuously through the filter is an equivalent but cheaper alternative. The so-called magnetic properties are basically worthless unless your diesel fuel is contaminated by ferous metals. Don Illusion

Magic Dust!!!

Don: I would have to agree. I think that this goes along with those magnets that people wore for joint and back pain. You remember all of the athletes that endorsed them. I believe that Practical Sailor felt that they did not have any value too. What does make sense is to have a bypass system that would recirculate the entire tank several times an hour. Run this for a couple of hours once a month and you will have some very clean fuel.

Kudos to Steve and Don...

I have one mounted on my scrubber unit. After the first year I disassembled it, I couldn't find any benefit of it. It's still there because it was free and I'm to lazy to replumb the scrubber. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Buford, Ga imd_ga@hotmail.com

Running Engine

Sometimes I just run the engine when at the slip. The 35.5 is plumbed to filter the fuel and send it back to the tank, but I suspect that the volume is quite small. I just don't motor and the fuel gets old. When I go sailing, I motor a couple 100 feet and turn into the wind and raise the sails. Since I put a hour meter on, I have logged about 10 hours in the last 4 years. It has been about 6 years since I drained the tank and cleaned it out. Its a lot of fun to lose your engine when you are motoring through the slips. Matter of fact, I added a small anchor and 50 foot of line at the stern. Its my emergency stop.

Dead vs Live bugs?

Even if the Algae-X (or other 'magic' devices)worked - is there any concievable benefit to circulating "Dead" (as opposed to untreated & "living" organisms)organisms through yopur engine?

Fresh Fuel

Fresh fuel is the best defense!!!!! I have a 20 gallon tank that I never fill completely. I usually have it less than half full. Instead of all this magic stuff I recommend a smaller tank and fresher fuel. If you only use 10 gallons a year why have a 30 gallon tank full of 3 year old fuel???? The ideal situation might be to have a large tank left empty and a small tank that is refilled regularly. Then on the big trips fill up the larger tank. I would bet that a small tank would be cheaper than an elaborate filtering system. Tom
