I have a 1985 Catalina 30TR with a Universal M25 diesel. The engine has a mysterious oil leak on the starboard side, high up on the engince, somewhere behind the alternator, which I simply cannot loacate. Any suggestions?
Bill, I have an '86 TR with the same motor but possibly a different configuration as my alternator is on the port side (looking forward). I have not had this problem by in my Mainsheet book there were several articles referencing this type problem. If memory serves me correct is seems like people were over torquing the alternator bracket bolt and cracking the timing cover and causing an oil leak. I hope this is not the case for you as the repair is not cheap, but this is all I know. Tim
If the timing cover is cracked and causing the problem, after that gets replaced, you might want to look into a new style alternator bracket that Universal made. I'm sure that Westerbeke would now have it, too. It spreads the load of the alternator over a greater number of bolts in the area.
