My friend has an M18 engine (13 years old)that runs at 220F when the thermostat is in. He has tried a new thermostat (From the Marina shop which is an authorized universal service)& the identical conditions exist. Without the thermostat he runs cold the whole time (low 100's) He has bought & changed the heat exchanger with no difference. What would be the next step to diagnose this problem. Thanks, Joe

Running cool

My Universal M25XP will not go above 130 degrees. So far we only ran her from one marina to another a distance of about 1/2 mile. I have since run the engine at the dock for up to 45 minutes at various speeds, and still cannot get the temp guage above 130. Does this sound like a thermostat or is it nothing to be worried about. I would never think of running an engine hot, but what can happen if the engine runs too cool?

Problem?

I believe your engine should operate at about 135 degrees. 220 will boil water & is hot enough to fry your engine. Sounds like the thermostat is doing it's job...

OVERHEAT

a couple of my dockmates have Catalina 30's of various age. They found a water hose that comes off the impeller assy makes a 90 degree turn, pieces of an old impeller got bound in the 90 degree causing high temp. They inspected the impeller area and removed all the broken pieces but these were down stream at the bend.

Joe Why not go to the source.? http://www.marinedieseldirect.com/universal/shopping/engine.php?engine=M18 I know they have an M25 owner's manual on line. You should be able to find yours. They also have a Q&A area. Good luck. Stu
