The M-18 engine manual states that the oil should be 30W HD (CD) and different "types" of oil should not be mixed. My question is how important is it do not mix different oils? My quess is that many people buy used boats and never know the kind of oil used by the previous owner. Are we actually talking about the oil itself i.e., 10W30 vs 30W or brand names i.e., Shell vs Mobil? Thanks,

Hi Bob: I believe the issue is when you change oil, use the same brand. If adding oil between changes, use the same brand as was used in the change. There is a remote posibility that additives in different brands could interact, but highly unlikely. Using a different brand for a new oil change, should not be a problem. Do use a oil rated CD or equivilent. Normal useage for your engine would require oil change approx every 50 hours, for me that is once a season, in the fall at haul out. Good luck, Dave S/V Westwind

The issue is to no mix oil in the same oil change, ie don't use both shell, and mobil because you have some of each. Obviously never mix oil grades in the same oil change. I use Pennzoil sae 30 works great. Good Luck

I switched to Shell Rotella 15w40 on my M18...

and the performance difference was evident. The original owner used 30w, but I thought it was a little hard to start on cool Florida mornings. It starts better and is a little quieter with the 15w-40. Have used it for 3 years and maybe 200 hours, total 1100 hours...so far so good. Wal-Mart sells it.
