Bobby, It appears your moored in IA... is that not Iowa? Why would the stores be emptying out and 7 Grain bread be the only thing in Iowa? I am confused.
LOL...The birthplace of Captain Kirk.
I sail the mighty and treacherous sarasota bay.

Oh.. well you can understand my confusion.. I guess I. Should stop reading the details...;)

I visited Sarasota Bay 5-6 years ago. It was a lot of fun. No sailing, but saw the tourist sights... Neat botanical Garden. The Big Kiss. And of course the Circus Museum...

Definitely take off the jib.. Chafing gear: Practical Sailor did some testing that showed that a waterproof covering may be worse than no covering.. The rain needs to get into the lines to cool the fibers during the high tension events.. Old blue jeans (think thrift store) may be a good choice.. With you guys on the west coast, it doesn't look kike it'll be too bad; the worst winds should be to the east of you, if the current forecast is close.. .. but prep is in order.. all ship's papers and stuff should go ashore .. Good Luck !

Considering the enormous time, cost and effort to secure an expensive sailboat in preparation for a storm of Dorian's nature, maybe this is a good time to batten down the house and take the boat on that trip to Appalachacola, Panama City, New Orleans or Havana, you've been dreaming about.
You will probably spend the same amount of money and time and you won't have that giant fiberglass ballistic ordinance sitting in the slip next to you ready for the powder to go off and send it shooting through every other boat in the marina. Your insurance company will thank you for it.
When faced with hurricanes, growing up in Clearwater, my father and his partner, took their boats offshore to ride the storms out. Collusion with hard objects is much more dangerous than high winds and big waves.
I'm not suggesting to ride a storm out like that, but there is time to make New Orleans before Dorian hits.

Took the furled jib off, which requires trailering the mast. Probably wasted my time.

My son says i should shave.

I've wasted my time in far less productive activities. I don't know what "Trailering" the mast means.

Yes, he is. He has a giant personality. Unfortunately, his love of sailing and the sea has faded with his stroke and the weakness that accompanied his recovery. He is hard to talk to about sailing now. I think it pains him more than he would ever say, to revisit those times.

Is that young Will in the cockpit? How did you avoid being called Gill? Which I think would be cool moniker.

If it was my boat, I'd be headed for Key West about now. Maybe not west like Johnny Appleseed, but "go south young man does come to mind."

I've always used carpet remnants and they have worked out very well for hurricane chafe gear. You can lace line through the backing and weave it through the line to keep it in place in the chock, and it's super cheap, not a bad thing in something that is so expendable.

Actually, my X-country ski coaches called me Gilly, in high school. That's my younger brother seated in the cockpit. That was taken during the sail from Clearwater, Fl to Maine. The picture was sent to me by ComPac after the guy who restored Puff found out who the original owner was (Question And Answer Forum) and CCd them some of our emails. I don't know how they came to have it, but the hull was provided to Clark Mills by ComPac for the mod.

Unstepped the mast and rested it on the trailer mast and transom mast support. Its tied down well.

Lastest weather report has the storm missing west coast of FL completly. Kinda want to go sailing tomorrow before the afternoon storms, but that would be the day i flip, need to be towed back and get interviewed by SNN news.

"Shaving" is an All Is Lost reference.

I am half prepped as of yesterday. Woke up this morning and it looks like a miss for SW Florida. Might wait a few more days before I finish or start to put everything back.

@Sailm8 patience is virtuous and a smart idea with this storm.
