I've seen one other on a Vega on San Francisco Bay. Don't know if it was OEM. Sure would like to have one. Is Proctor still in business and do they have them? Chuck & Laura, Hi from warm and comfortable Charleston, SC. Watched your mast lowering video last night. I have got to get a mast step like the one on your boat. Perhaps while your spinning tunes at the radio station you could draw a plan for how it is made. And post some close up pictures of the mast step. And the bridle you made to assist in lowering the mast. I had something like your mast step on an 1977 O'day 25. Manning J. OEM (original equipment manufacturer) I believe most of the masts on Vegas were by Proctor. Selden seems to ring a bell also. Proctor made all the early masts up to about 1975
then Selden for the late Series 2 and Series 3 - I think

I do not think the tabernacle hinge was factory
fitted, it is the only one I have seen like that. IMHO

I've noticed that there are a lot of people asking about hinged mast bases. I found this link from Ballenger Spars. About 2/3 down the page you will see the pricing for the hinged bases. 3 of them have links to pictures. I plan on buying and installing the first one on the list.custom parts list custom parts list ballenger spar systems, inc. custom part list prices and specifications subject to change halyards- wire rope without notice. Hi Ric

If we can get a design that allows the Vega mast to
go forward like Chucks then i am sure i can make them as strong as needed. It
seems to me that the one shown does not seem overly strong. How is the hinge
attached to the hinge?

Cheers

Steve,I don't know yet. I haven't ordered one because I'm not ready to do the mast and rigging yet. Although I'm getting close. I came across this site several years ago from someone else that had it on their Vega. The hinged base will definitely make raising and lowering the mast a much easier process. I'll be ordering one within the next 30 days or so. When I get it, I can take lots of pictures of it for you.Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net

Sorry about the jargon Larry. Walt got it. Original Equipment Manufacture. In this case that would be Proctor. From the looks of it, it should be easy to have one fabricated from flat stock. It is a very simple square hinge with a round hole for wiring in the middle and a two inch flange that matches the inside of the mast tube. The mast fits closely over the flange and is secured with machine screws. The hinge pin is just a half inch, grade 8 bolt.
