Steve,
I don't know yet. I haven't ordered one because I'm not ready to do the mast and rigging yet. Although I'm getting close. I came across this site several years ago from someone else that had it on their Vega. The hinged base will definitely make raising and lowering the mast a much easier process. I'll be ordering one within the next 30 days or so. When I get it, I can take lots of pictures of it for you.

Am I reading this correctly? Are we talking about a tabernacle or a hinged base plate for the mast? I like the idea of a tabernacle more than hinged base plate due to strength, stress considerations. The video of lealea that Chuck showed in my thought was a hinged mast base plate. Anybody have pics of a proper type tabernacle? Thanks for your patience...Cheers

Dear Alaskayfish,I just posted some photos of my Vega (Spray, hull 3339) with the tabernacle system.I purchased her in Holland where this system is used a lot because of the canals and bridges.Arend Schram is an expert of this system.Contrary to the system showed in the Video from Chuck, this system requires an arch which acts as a lever. It also requires that the upper shrouds are hinged at the same level as the stainless steel step hinge. It raises and lowers the mast backwards, so no need to have somebody on the pontoon in front of the boat to help. I have been raising and lowering the mast several times with the help of my Brother and I am happy with it. As you can see, I have been motoring through the Dutch canals with the mast hinged and lowered. If necessary, it is possible to lower the mast just 30-40° to pass under a bridge and then raise it back. This system is slightly different from the "Sprague" PDF mast raising and lowering one (available in the files session). In my Vega the mast is stepped on the stainless steel hinged base. When raising and lowering my mast, I do not attach the forestay to the arch bar (as in the Sprague drawing). This because I have a roller furling system. I attach the genoa halyard. An assistant has to accompany the furling forestay system.Hope this helps, marcoAlbin Vega 3339 Spray From: "alaskaflyfish@... Marco, Thanks for the pictures of the tabernacle. Your example is exactly what I was considering when referring to a tabernacle. I like your system very much and will use your pictures as a guide to fabricating one of my own. Any other information on this modification that you think is apropos please let me know... Best regards.....Tim Malone

If I'm not too late to the party, I'd be VERY GRATEFUL for pics/drawings
as well!! We just purchased Vega #3360 (if I'm reading the hull number
correctly) and in the near future it will be an absolute requirement
that we can raise and lower the mast ourselves. THANK YOU! - Gene Neill

After much searching, I found that Ballenger Spar had the best quality mast hinge. I just installed it tonight and it looks good. It is a little more expensive than the others available but it is worth it.

There are articles on the mast step and the procedure on the American
Vega Assn. web site as well as a couple of videos on YouTube of it
being done. It has been discussed quite a lot here in the group as
well so you could search the archives to review the discussion. I
will see if I can find some good photos of the step on Lealea, but I
think I published some in the newsletter years ago.
