Straight cotter pins are stronger in application but, I haven't had problems with my lowers & upper shrouds. For fore & aft stays, I use the straight type, as I also have a bowsprit & titanium 20 bobstay. I guess it's more about personal choice.
We do get severe afternoon thunderstorms in summer on Florida's "Left" coast & some sever storms can get up to 50 MPH with waterspouts. If so, I'm motoring under bare pole. If seeing something coming towards me & my first thought is to douse sail. I douse the sail/s, Bare stick, no problems. I no longer wait to decide, as your first thought is the way to go. You can always shake out the sails if nothing develops.
You just wanna be sure NOT to get caught in the, "SHIZZ."
