Low Moaning Noise - Wind Transducer

On our H340, over the last couple of months, we have noticed a low, moaning acoustical noise that comes and goes inside the cabin. As near as I can figure, it seems to be related to the masthead anemometer as the noise seems to peak and wane at particular wind speeds. I can vary the pitch and volume of the noise by tightening/loosening the topping lift. Doesn't seem to be wind-in-the-wires type of noise but rather a reasonance in the rigging system related to the anemometer. Anybody experiencing a wind transducer failure that displays this kind of symptom? Any other ideas?

Oh, please!

I can think of other sources of moaning , but the anemometer is not one of them.

I suspect that it is indeed the rigging.

My 340 does the same thing. Yes, ease the topping lift or the main sheet a tad and that should help. Once in a great while I also get a weird vibration in my rigging from the acoustical signal of propeller driven boats going by my slip.

I suspect you have a rope topping lift and this is the culprit. Loosening it will help, but unless you have it so loose that the boom swings, it will not go away and that creates another noise issue. We finally replaced ours with a combination vinyl covered wire, think lifelines, and rope It went away. Chuck

Thanks, all. I will definitely check Monday per Ross, but won't hold my breath (I am staying in the middle on this one).

It is making sense, thanks to all your collective smarts and experience, that wind-in-the-wire resonance is probably what I am dealing with. Good news, no anemometer repair trip up the stick. Next week I will try a clever suggestion from the archives and wrap the main halyard around the topping lift a few times (to disturb the airflow around both) before stowing it at the boom end.

my formosa makes different pitches at differing wind speeds--is your rig--is not bad- can tell wind speed without looking after not much time..LOL...
