Low-hung boom on Pearson 30.

I recently purchased a P 30 and am very happy with this fine boat. One issue that I do have
is the low-hung boom which nearly touches the dodger. I am new to sailing, so I don't know
if there is any possible adjustment or possible the mainsail (original?) has stretched.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What you discribe is normal on many boats. You could try lifting the boom with the topping lift but that affects sail trim.
Good luck and welcome aboard.

I once owned a Pearson 30 for several years. Yes, a very fun little boat. When I bought mine the gooseneck fitting (where the boom attaches to the mast) had been raised 2 or 3 inches. The boat had also been retrofitted with a wheel and binnacle, so no longer a stock boat. Of course, if you did raise the boom you'd likely need a new main sail w/ a shorter luff, plus the boat would not often sail (race) to its PHRF rating, having less sail area.

How far is your main from the top of the mast? If you have room, raise the gooseneck.

Thanks for the tip. I won't be racing, so raising the boom and shortening the luff may be
a good option.

I raised StarGazers Mast 3" from stepping and its all good no change needed to sails. The new mast-step is now 3" higher. Benefits keeps the mast-step out of the water.. less corrosion too! Best Regards Capt. Rob
