Hi, Everyone, first-time poster here! I have a Helms 24' pocket cruiser sloop. 1978 model. I lost my keel at the seem line with no apparant leaking or taking water in. There are three bolts sticking out from the joint down toward the bottom of the sea, now. It looks like a clean break. I also lost the rudder in the sea. Does anyone know how much it costs for me to get another keel myself and put it back on myself? Or the rudder? I put 600 lbs of sandbags in the bottom of the boat to help create some ballast, which is helping some. The keel was a fixed lead keel and very very heavy. Now the boat floats very high in the water.

Mrboatman-- Sorry to hear about this! What did you slam into or what slammed into you? You should look at Mars Metals about the keel and Foss Foam about your rudder. Simple e-searches will get you there. Hopefully this is a insurance claim issue for you. You might want to start looking for sisterships to harvest these needed parts. Please tell us the story on the incident. Best of Luck. Rob Hessenius

interesting

For the keel...if you don't have insurance...check with every boatyard in the area as they usually have some laying around after crushing boats. For the rudder...there are a lot of options from making your own to Foss Foaming it to buying a used one and modifying it. How odd that both items would fail at the same time. But, now you can put on a bulb keel. Good luck with it.

Hey MrBoatman! Saw your ad for the boat today on Craigslist. I also have a friend with a small boat who told me about a similiar experience some time ago. He had his boat in a shallow marina here that got beaten up during a similiar squall. Try calling Frank or Peggy at Cobb's Marina - 588-5401 or 588-8926. They've steered me right every time I've dealt with them. Also try contacting Howdy Bailey. I don't have his number, but Cobb's will know it. He is a master boat builder here and he'd know where to steer you for replacement parts if that's what you want to do. Good luck. BTW I've had good luck with the Craigslist here in Tidewater. Best Wishes.

How did you get the boat home?

No keel and no rudder means that you have a raft.

Sounds like a junk yard boat now

Losing your rudder and keel are signiicant events and I wonder if the repair is worth the value of the boat.

Thanks To Those Who Helped

Thanks, Marcia and others who made suggestions. To those who were sarcastic and condescending, your remarks were like making fun of someone, so you wanted to make fun of a fellow sailor who had a disaster. If it was you you would not be laughing. You know who you are, laughing and making fun, you give a first time poster a very bad opinion of SOME of the ***holes who post on these forums. Hope nothing bad ever happens to you so you will always be able to laugh at the misfortunes of others. Tanks a lot! By the way, I have more degrees than you, just not trying to prove it on this forum. . . . .
