I'll have to get back to you with the exact measurements. Roughly it is the size of your thumb nail and probably 6 threads.

To me it looks like an adjusting nut of some sort because of the very distinct marking on the top. The curved line with a circle at the end seems to indicate that if you turn the nut counter-clockwise you will be minimizing the adjustment and if you turn it clockwise you will maximize IT. The question now is, what is IT? Since it is painted grey, it's most likely a Yanmar part since that's the color they paint their engines. I was going to say it looks like an adjusting nut for throttle or gear shift linkage but I think you may have noticed other issues before you found the nut. Sorry, no other guess here.

Maybe a lock-nut for when you adjust the angle of an electronic device- maybe at the helm. Or a radio that is panel-mounted but never had the brackets installed behing the panel? Do you have a hatch with a brace that would use that locknut on?

Thanks but there aren't any electronic devices near the engine compartment.

I would think the picture of the Sperm on the nut would give you some idea of its use! :)

its off of a tool.... I cant remember the tool or if it was a power tool or a hand tool, or where it was when I saw it, but I remember the coarse knurling and the little design on it....
check your tool box for whats missing an adjuster/tensioning nut....

Thanks. I am starting to feel better. I'll go through my tools and ask my diesel mechanic if he recognizes it. Have a great day.

YOU are amazing. GOD Bless you! I know exactly where I put my feeler gauge and when I get home I am going to see if it is missing this nut. Odds are it is. I wish you a prosperous and healthy NEW YEAR my friend.
