In search of my next boat Palm Harbor, FL
If you got kids make them take the helm... They are cheaper than an autopilot, will work on food (or sugar, as in the case of mine), mostly can make choices about where to steer, adapt to wind changes, and can avoid other boats. It also gets them involved, builds their self esteem, and makes them feel like what they do contributes. "thanks" goes a long way. It's never too early to start, I started my daughter at 9 y/o, and had my niece take the helm at 6.

Just my .02

For whatever it's worth. I am very familiar with the channel coming out of the back bay. No way would I ever depend on an auto pilot to make the run outta there. Mostly the autopilot is best at maintaining a straight course. There are all kinds of connections to allow you to navigate a course, from the chartplotter, and if everything is working fine, your good. Just keep in mind that every connection you make to it, is another possible error. I have a friend who has all the bells and whistles. Auto pilot is tied in to the chart plotter, and wind instruments and the radar. It works very good, most of the time. But just one little glitch and the whole mess goes to hell. I know that many on this board will disagree, but I have an ST6000, which is set up stand alone. I use it for maintaining a straight course, and for tacking. Nothing more. When ever in the ICW, it is only used to allow me to go down inside, to get a drink or use the head. Just too much traffic and too much shallow water in our area to trust it very long. Offshore I use it to maintain a course, but pretty much never leave the cockpit.

Hey all, thanks for the help and hi Nice and Easy. It's good to see someone that is from around here. Yeah, I keep trying to break it down into the absolute basics that I need but then I can't help but to think about the future. I really am getting this boat just to weekend on. I'll mostly just sail out to the gulf and drop anchor somewhere and just relaxe for the weekend. Let my two daughters ages 5 and 7 play on the beach and watch some TV and fish, BBQ, and fly kites and what not. I spearfish, SCUBA and kitesurf. I will never race or get too technical with the sailing. Mostly get to a spot and chill for the weekend, then come back home. I think using a paper chart, my Ipad navionics and my iphone navionics for back up, all I REALLY need would be depth.

Does anyone know where I can find a demo of MAXSEA time zero? It seems a few of the companies making PC software have demos, but none advertise. I found a couple hiding here and there on the internet for raymarine RNS, fugawi, seaclear and a couple others. The Maxsea one is the one that looks the most interesting to me.

Are time zero trident by nobeltec and max sea time zero the same thing, just different names for different countries?
