Looking for help with a CDI Flexible Furler FF6. I have the manual and I have read the directions, but I still can not get to my turnbuckle to check it. Also the last time I was out I got the Jib unfurled, and it could not get it re-furler. It feels like the furler is getting hung up on something. Any help would be appreciated. Bob K

CDI FF6 suggestion

I just finished installing one on my boat and it works great. If you want to inspect the turnbuckle, you should be able to remove the extrusion support pin and slide the drum up the extrusion. You might have to move the sail and furling line out of the way. The only thing I could think of that it is hanging up on would be if the extrusion support pin was not installed. Then the extrusion would be resting on top of the turnbuckle. This of course, would not be good. Their manual is not the greatest. Dave

Bob, to inspect the turnbuckle

You must first remove the sail. Then lift the grey foil section of the furler while removing the horizontal pin half way up the black drum section. Then allow the foil to drop down on the turn buckle and slide the black upper drum portion up the grey foil. The turnbuckle should be exposed. I don't know how much furler experience you have so, here is a what to do and not do when furling. DO: 1. head into the wind. 2. release the jib sheet so there is some lufting. 3. Pull the furler line to furl the sail. Pull it while you watch the sail furl. You want tight secure wraps. If the sail is lufting too much, the wraps will be uneven and loose. There is a balance between lufting and trimmed that the sail will furl nicely and still not be hard to pull in. Don't do's: 1. Try to furl the sail while it is trimmed tight. 2. Force anything! If you force things you could untwist the forestay. The furler line will give some resistance but you should not have to winch it. One thing that may cause a problem is if your forestay is not tight enough. The sag in the foil makes it hard to start furling. One main note: if you take the horizontal pin out of the black section of the furler to inspect the turnbuckle, IT MUST BE PUT BACK IN! That pin keep the foil from resting on the turnbuckle. If it is not in, the foil will turn the turnbuckle and could possibly turn it all the way out, releasing the forestay and causing a demasting. Hope this explaination helped r.w.landau

Thanks

Thanks for all your help. I will look at this, and hopefully fix it over the weekend. Smooth sailing and fair winds. Bob

Rad, I can't tell, but post it on a seperate post,

I am sure someone knows what it is. It looks like the aluminum extrusions. All the major mfg. used to have aluminum extrusion foils. I would like to guess but I would rather you have the right answer to your question. Rad. I know the CDI ff furlers but not many more. r.w. O.k. so here is my guess... It has many design features of an older profurl. that's my guess. I hope someone has the right answer. I also believe it is at least 10 years old.

I think it is a Flexible Furler from the picture.

I think it is a Flexible Furler from the picture. The metal strips which go up the sides of the rope cup look very much like the ones on my boat. I will try to get some pictures this weekend.

Thanks, since ownership of my boat for 4 yrs I pretty much know the boat inside and out with the exception of the furler and port lights so I can replace the missing screens and since we were talking about furlers I threw it out there. It seems to work OK and if I had to replace it I'll post and ask that question, thats what I love about these forums :)

For Bob...CDI furler help

1. Look the company up on the internet. 2. Call company's telephone number. 3. Be prepared to talk to the owner as he's the only person who's answered the phone when I've called 4. Be prepared to have your furler problem diagnosed within a few minutes as he is very knowledgeable and willing to help, AND possibly 5. Be prepared to take furler down (pain in the aft) and fix whatever is giving you problems, 6. Write back with any problems or just to let us know that it's up and running. I've got one of these too.

Flexible Furler (FF) – Maybe/Maybe Not

Please see my new post. When I e-mailed CDI I got the following. I gave it a try and it works. Good Luck. You do not have a Flexible Furler. You have an old Cruising Design Reefer system. It appears to be a Micro Reefer, but it is hard to tell dimensional sizes from the pictures. For a parts list, visit our web site www.sailcdi.com , at the home page, select SPARE PARTS GUIDE, at the next page, select REEFER SYSTEM. That will take you to the reefer identification page. Compare your extrusion shape with the choices. Then go to the left hand side of the page and select the appropriate model. You will be taken to an exploded view of the system with parts identified. That should help you identify what you need to repair the system. call CDI at 607-749-4599 or e-mail and we will see what we can do to provide the parts you might need. Tom

RAD, Yours is a CDI furler but not the FF style

Follow Bob's new thread to the CDI web page and you can find your furler their. I don't think it is the same model as Bob's but it is pretty easy to figure it out with their system. r.w.landau
