Catalina 27 (Standard Rig; O/B; Dinette Int.) Santa Barbara Harbor
Looks like the keel has the "catalina smile" (crack between forward part of keel and stub) which is not uncommon, but will need to be repaired. Maybe some other rust and weeping elsewhere on the keel, but hard to tell from the photos. Keelbolts look good (common for them to show more corrosion). Also the rudder shows rust and weeping at the top where the post connects--may have had a saturated rudder?--at the least that would have to be filled.

Thought the rig looked nice, from what I could see, mast in nice condition. Maybe even had the stainless spreader bracket upgrade? But check the chainplates, especially on the other side of the bulkhead (not pictured). The bulkheads appeared to have water damage where the chainplates bolt on, so I'd poke around that wood really good. Not uncommon for that bulkhead and/or chainplate to corrode and need replacement, due to worn out sealant on deck.

I know it can seem like a lot to have this boat surveyed by a pro, but if you're seriously considering her after looking into everything, it's worth the peace of mind.

Catalina 27 Dallas
the pictures tell alot, Im concerened with the crack in the Keel, The rudder looks like it may have water damage and possibly rotted, There are quite a few water stains that has me concerned, possible chainplates and leaky windows, There is evidence of water present in the keel area inside the boat, This boat will be a lot of work to get ready, Does the engine run?? Would be a great project boat if you have a lot of time on your hands

I boutht a Catalina with some similar issues but not as severe. One thing to check regarding how water may get into the boat is the cockpit draines. The hoses can rot and leak a lot of water into the inside. Also replace all the gate valves and check the through hulls for damage, especially the fresh water inlet for the motor. Mine was corroded through, easy to replace. good luck.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
The Catalina 27 is a good boat. I had an Uncle and Aunt that sailed one around the Chesapeake Bay for 25 years. The boat was a 1973.

The Atomic 4 is a gas engine and there are people who like it and other people who don't care much for it. If it runs it isn't something to address now.

There looked to be a lot of water damage on the boat. Check to make sure that the teak plywood isn't delaminating at the bulkheads. If it is and it is rotting it may need replacing which is a big job. Tap the hull and rudder lightly with a wooden hammer and you can find any blister or delamination. My Catalina 30 had a delaminated rudder (it was a 1990) and it was replaced as part of the survey. If the sound of the hammer hitting the rudder is a plink it probably is okay. If it is a thunk then it is delaminated.

If you are buying sails for it check bacon and associates if you want used sails. Bacon and Associates sells used sails and it is good to buy from them but don't sell through them. Catalina 27 is a very popular boat and parts should be easy to aquire.

Catalina Direct (www.catalinadirect.com) is a great place to find parts. Also, defender is another descent source of general parts.

Good luck on working on her and I am sure if you get her upgraded then you will enjoy a nice sailing boat.
