I go along with Bill’s observations in principle, hence my initial query to Raymarine. Whether they call my understanding of ‘True Wind’ ‘Ground Wind’ or whatever, I don’t care.


All I want, via the GPS, is a rough ‘weather forecast’, similar to that obtained thru the paddlewheel' - as mentioned by FourWinds.
I actually thought, that as my Garmin GPS info is fed into the course computer via NMEA and not SeaTalk, the latter’s active connection, even though showing a zero when the paddlewheel is fouled, overrides the NMEA info. I read somewhere, that in the Raymarine system, SeaTalk info takes precedence over NMEA info. However, that is not the answer I received from Raymarine.

Sorry to deflect your practical question with terminology distractions. It's a disease of being a geek.

On the practical side, it depends on which Raymarine wind instrument that you have. Some of them are happy to display the "ground wind" as they call it and that would be exactly what you are asking for.

Can your GPS receive data from the wind instrument ? Some GPS units will do a true wind calulation internally.

No worries, Todd. Each period has its phenomena and today’s life would be less interesting without geeks.

My instrument is a ST60 and obviously not geared for the info. My GPS is only a h/h Garmin 78s, which does not offer such calcs, but is generally quite sufficient for my current purposes. It is connected to the Raymarine system via plug-in at the helm.

The whole question is not really that critical and I shall keep on with my usual rough calcs.
