I've seen several pictures in posts recently that show user-mods where an owner has placed a line control device (a clutch or a spinlock XPR) between the genoa car and the winch. I assume done to allow the winch to be used temporarily for another use. While OK, this is not a great application for these devices. Beyond the tight internal line tolerances that make it harder for the line to run free, these devices must be placed perfectly in line with the winch and car. This is problematic, and even impossible when the car position changes.
A much better choice in most cases is a footblock with a jammer. The device is less expensive than a clutch, more reliable and designed for this job. Like this Lewmar.
More importantly, it can be used to bend the travel of the line, which can be helpful in its own right, and needed when a genoa car moves. A great solution in many situations. Looks like this in practice. The device is just forward of the active jib winch with the sheet running thru it.
