Line controls for sheets

I've seen several pictures in posts recently that show user-mods where an owner has placed a line control device (a clutch or a spinlock XPR) between the genoa car and the winch. I assume done to allow the winch to be used temporarily for another use. While OK, this is not a great application for these devices. Beyond the tight internal line tolerances that make it harder for the line to run free, these devices must be placed perfectly in line with the winch and car. This is problematic, and even impossible when the car position changes.

A much better choice in most cases is a footblock with a jammer. The device is less expensive than a clutch, more reliable and designed for this job. Like this Lewmar.

More importantly, it can be used to bend the travel of the line, which can be helpful in its own right, and needed when a genoa car moves. A great solution in many situations. Looks like this in practice. The device is just forward of the active jib winch with the sheet running thru it.

Thanks for pointing that out jackdaw. We've started using reaching sheets but it's sometimes hard to transition between those and the upwind sheets without losing time. Something like this might be exactly what we need. I can't tell from the picture - is it possible to mount this on a shackle to a pad eye, or does it need to be bolted to the deck?

That's a PERFECT application for it. That's one of our use-cases... while we can use the aft spin winch for the 2nd sheet, often it is more convenient to use the cabintop winch. The block needs to be mounted firmly to a base. That base can be the deck or a raised pad, but it need to be solidly affixed so the unit cannot turn or move.

Sounds good. I'll have to see if there's any place I could mount them for the reaching sheets. I suspect there might not be a really good place for that so I may consider just replacing the existing jib sheet foot blocks with these to help the transitions.

Now that little tidbit of info was worth the price of admission! Thanks for that Jackdaw. That's sharing 'cool' besides 'sharing your fast'.

Good idea. FYI here is a picture of the lewmar part mounted as the primary footblock on a First 36.7. Its a factory installed part. Not our boat, this owner has a length of shock cord tied between it and a 150 to keep lines from getting snagged while racing.
