I need to lift my Yanmar 2GM20f out of me Beneteau. There are two engine lifting eyes on the motor and I am a bit concerned about their robustness. Has anyone lifted their motor using just these lifters. Or should I use straps?

I have never lifted a Yanmar but have used those eyes to lift a Universal 5411 and a Perkins 4-108. It’s what they are designed for.

I had to lift my 3JH2E a few inches to remove the transmission. It works.

What does your engine weigh? 300 lbs? Steel is about 100000 lbs per square inch.

Indicates a 4-40 screw is good enough (although not much safety margin)

I bet the screw holding that hook on is much bigger than that.

What ******* at the Yanmar factory would put on lifting eyes that break? That engine has been out in the world for 30 years wouldn't you suppose the word would get out if those eyes were insufficient?

Not only that, but they're probably put in the right places so that the engine balances properly and goes straight up when you use those eyes.

I lifted my 2gm with transmission using the eyes.. The eyes position balance the engine nicely from side to side. By adjusting the attachment to the strap that connects the eyes, you should be able to balance the engine. We first tried nylon straps around the bottom of the engine that didn't work well..

The 2GM20F weighs 252 lbs. The lifting eyes should be plenty, they were designed and placed there for that purpose.
