can anyone. confirm the size? M14 is too small and M16 is too large.

I am not clear what you are referring to. If that nut came out of that plastic packaging, it is zinc plated and should not be used on a boat. Use stainless steel nut instead.

I need a nut for stanchion bolt in the picture. I was trying to size the nut and failed; hence, the question.

You are correct about using stainless.

Head to the closest big box hardware store with your stanchion base in hand and check out their collection of cheap galvanized nuts for sizing.

If you've got a marine supplier close by, so much the better to check the size AND purchase a SS nylock nut all in one fell swoop.

Better get two nuts, one to accidentally drop over the side and the other to actually install :(.

that's where I was when I took the picture. No luck finding a fit; hence, the question.

Far be it for me to give you expert advice on mechanical issues but I do see that both M14 and M16 come in fine and coarse thread pitch. The coarse is 2.00mm and the fine is 1.50mm.

that's a possibility. The M14's that i tried were 1.75mm. The M16 slipped right over the threads.
