I am replacing the lifelines and forgot to measure before leaving Mexico!!!!
Would anyone know the approximate lengths involved for a 33 Hunter 1981 ?
Any suggestions as to the diameter/config?
I'd prefer the bare (not plastic coated) variety
I have a friend in Miami with a sailboat who is heading down, and I'd like to load him up with some, plus thimbles and turnbuckles so as to replace them when I return.
Many thanks :)

Approximately Bob? Are you going to swage the studs yourself? Seco South made the originals. It might be worth a call to see if they keep records. They made my new ones but I sent them the old ones. If you don't plan to cut and add the terminal on one end you need better than "approximate". Numbers: Toll Free: 888.535.7326

Approximate = thimbles/lashing/crimped sleeves/turnbuckles

Hi Ed,
appreciate your comments
yes, approximate is the order of the day
I have done some customizing on my pulpit & stanchions, so I will not even attempt to use the original measurements.
I intend to put a thimble and crimped sleeve (sorry english is not my first language), as well as turnbuckle and lashing on each so as to get the tension I desire.
still wondering how much to purchase? might just go 4x33' and trim from there
Still wondering about the size and type to get. Any ideas/opinions/suggestions?
many thanks for your interest

Bob:

There are measuring templates so you can lay them out on paper and they will make them up for you.

Contact John at Seco South for his advice.

Lifelines in mexico -- skipper in the US.

I guess I should have been a bit clearer.
The old lifelines are no longer on the boat.
I am in the US and the boat is in Mexico, so no measuring possible right now.
Also wondering what is the best configuration for the cable (1x19, 7x7, etc.), based on what others may have experienced.
Many thanks
Bob

Your English is fine Bob. Terminology might be a problem for me as I am not sure what you mean by "thimble and crimped sleeve". My lifelines are very simple, just have a coating and a threaded stud on each end. That stud is "swaged" on, like a crimp but very strong. The wire is not expensive, four wires of 30' each would probably be enough. My original wire was 3/16" coated to 5/16" and I think the H33 was the same. Seco South will recommend bare 3/16". You could go with 1/4" at a substantial increase in cost. You still need to call them with your terminal end requirements. Oh, and the wire is 7x7.

Hi Ed,
thanks for the reply
yes, bare wire is also my choice
I have heard good things about the 1x9 -- have you had any experience or seen any on boats around your areas of sailing?
Would you have any idea how long were your bow to stern dimensions for the upper and lower lifelines?
The previous lifelines were as you described. Had them made in Titusville in '06, but they have since gotten pretty torn up.
I have cut off the badly corroded stanchion top-ends where the uppers went (seems like perhaps due to a huge amount of galvanic loss -- p.o. did not believe in zincs), replaced with the sea-dog 1" caps. Great fit, sturdy, big and easy for the admiral to support herself on as she boards and ever so gracefully sticks the landing...
Upon close inspection I also noticed the holes in the stanchions for the lowers were also very sharp & jagged...tried a few different alternatives for a couple years without success. I have since covered them with the schaeffer stanchion rings ( http://www.marinepartdepot.com/ststdostri.html ) and now I'm ready for the new wire/cable.
There are no swaging services in or around the area I'm sailing. I have chosen to go with a stainless thimble at each end -- lashing on the bow and a turnbuckle/shackle at the stern so as to tension to desired strength. The thimble would also require a crimped sleeve and some sailtape wraps to keep bleeding to a minimum.
Unlike swaging services, first aid services are pretty decent around the marina...
I have moved/modified my pulpit and pushpit, so using a standard h33 template would not work for me at this point. However, I would like to know the lengths measured for such a template.
maybe I will give Seco a call and ask them for these lengths.
Once again thanks for the help.
cheers
Bob

When do you need the measurements? I will be back to my boat next weekend if you have that much time. Ed H

1981 H33 Distance between FWD-most stanchion & pulpit?

Hi Ed,
I was wondering if you would be able to measure the distance from the forwardmost stanchion to the spots on the pulpit where the lifelines attach -- upper and lower measurements?
I think we have them pretty well spec'd out until the swivelled double eye just fwd of the forwardmost stanchion. We will have these swaged on by our supplier (sailing services in miami), and leave both ends unfinished so as to attach the thimbles, sleeves and turnbuckles when I get back aboard.
many thanks
Bob

Sorry Bob... We were at the boat Saturday, so the only measurements I made were the total lengths: top line= 30 feet 5 inches; lower line= 29feet 8 inches.
I will return to the boat July first and will get the other measurements for you if someone else doesn't provide them to you before then. Ed H
