The life line cable covers are cracked and dirty. Do I need replace the life lines or can I replace the cable cover? If I replace the cover, does the new cover go over the old cover?
You can get new covers at West Marine, etc. Take the old covers off, check for corrosion (especially at the fittings), broken strands, kinks, and replace any on the lifelines that are damaged. Slip the new covers on and then celebrate by going for a sail.Fair winds!
We replaced our lifeline covers a few months ago. Lifeline covers come in different sizes. I would recommend that you use calipers to measure the size of your lifeline before heading to West Marine. Removing old, cracked covers is easy - just peel them off. Be careful if you need to cut them off not to damage the cable. Installing new ones is not as easy as they fit rather tight. Takes a little patience and time, but the end result is beautiful. It's a rather inexpensive way to improve the appearance of your boat.
